From my reading, the Flat Coated Retriever and the Large Munsterlander have similar personalities, and certainly look very similar. However, I have owned a Flat Coat but only spent an afternoon around a Munsterlander. Can anyone with more information/experience make a comparison?
Thanks, John Martin

Although both are gundogs one belongs to the retriever group and the other to the HPR group. Both groups were designed for differing purposes and therefore the personalities and behaviours are different. HPRs as a group are a lot more headstrong, independent and stubborn because they are required to have a lot of initiative - to hunt, point, flush and retrieve tenderly to hand; the flattie is much more of a happy go lucky sort. An hpr will, if you are not careful in training, become self employed by hunting over a VERY large area.

i have had f/c for 18 years i would say that they personalities are not similar to a musterlander,

I have 4 Munsters and can only compare them to what Flatcoats I have known met.
Munsters are definitely more noisy, both breeds love water, Munsters are an HPR breed but they aren't as free ranging as some other HPR's hence they are better for the lone hunter. They are, on a whole, good natured and good with kids. Munsters though have definite characters, everyone I know has a pesonality all of their own and will make you totally aware of it too! That's why I love 'em!!! :) :D
Dumb question for the day, what is an HPR breed???
