Topic Dog Boards / Feeding / Is Bess over weight?

Bess is 7 1/2 mths old pup looking sleek and shiny as a Gordon Setter should................however we got a shock when we weighed her. Maybe the way we did it was a little unorthodox. I stand on the scales yell out my weight, hubby carefully hands me the dog and looks between my legs for the new weight! Arithmetic does the rest. We have checked the figures and calculated Bess is 4 1/2 stones - don't do kilos. The info we have would seem to mean she is overweight even if she was fully grown. She is fed on Purina Beta for junior large breeds and small amounts of Butchers Tripe also the occasional tripe stick and titbits for training. I seem to remember someone saying Gordon Setters up North are bigger than those in the South. Yes - Bess is of Northern breeders.
Should we be worried?

Hi, I would say if she looks right - sleek and you can feel her ribs easily then she is not overweight. I dont know anything about Setters so am perhaps not the best one to answer you. How tall /heavy she should be now? To be accurate you will have to ask an expert on your breed. I take little notice of what feed bags say as to how much to feed, but only use it as a rough guide when I feed someone new and then judge how much to give day by day when I see their condition getting lighter or heavier. Each dog is different and even within a breed there will be early and late maturers, gaining their final height/ideal weight at different ages.

Hi Sandy, my experience is with Irish Setters, not Gordon, but alot applies to all the Setter breeds. At 7 months your girl will be very much at the leggy gangly stage, and has probably had something of a growth spurt recently. Correct weight is more a case of look and feel than actual numbers. Look down on your puppy from above, does she have a 'waist', and can you feel, but not see her ribs. If so she's probably fine. If not then just be more careful with food amounts and treats, puppies shouldn't be 'dieted' as such, but she's at a life stage where her shape is changing.

Thanks all. Bess certainly has a waist and a cute wiggle when she walks! Doesn't seem to be that 'gangly' but as you say she has still has some shape changes to come. I love all Setters, they are a beautiful breed and a delightful challenge to train. Pleasant resistance seems to be their motto!
