Topic Dog Boards / Health / Smelly Dog/Anal Glands?

My husky has recently become very smelly. She stinks so bad, we don't like to have her in the same room as us. We tried bathing her, and that didn't help at all, she still stinks. She smells like she rolled around in poop, but she hasn't. It seems to be coming from her rear end, it is especially bad when she puts her rear end right in front of a floor fan and the stink just encompasses the room. Like I said we have tried washing her, and it doesn't help. She occassionally drags her rear end on the carpet and leaves that wonderful trail of much behind her. I think this smell may be because of some problems in her anal glands. She is really sensitive above her rear, I can't even touch her tail with out her giving me a warning growl. I was wondering if anyone knew of any natural ways to cure this. I heard that a high fiber diet would help, or adding metamucil to her food. Any suggestuions?
Thanks
Jeanne

I would take her to the vet and have her anal glands emptied, then talk about why they may be clogging up. She must be very sore back there to growl at you so have her looked at.

ttfn :)

She needs to see the vet it sound as if they are infected so will need th be cleaned out, then give her a bone once aweek the will keep her poop hard and should help with keeping glands clear.

Hi, Please see my previous notes on page 10 entitled 'smelly bottom'. Our dog had his anal glands squeezed 4 times , antibiotics and an op to flush out glands. It turns out now that it wasn't his anal glands at all! He smelled as if he had rolled in something too and our house stunk. It is diet. We are still trying to ascertain what it is that upsets him and used only a complete food from the vets called 'James Wellbeloved' . Immediately the smell went and we are now adding something different each day to his diet to enable us to eliminate the offending food. So far he can eat eggs and vegetables added to his complete without smelling. We are now trying Bakers SENSITIVE complete and so far so good. Artificial additives are looking likely at the moment to be the offenders. We were trying the BARF diet but had problems obtaining decent 'raw meaty bones' and there is also some controversy amongst vets as to whether bones are good or bad for dogs teeth. I have spoken to so many people who have dogs with anal gland problems and none of them smelled as bad as my dog. Good luck!
