Although I dont breed I would suppose part of it is down to gut feeling .
Also finding out where the potential owners live , whether they have a garden etc , whether they are familiar wth the breed , have they owned before , are there children in the family and of what age etc etc
Some breeders say they will vet the house also to see its suitable .
If they are your puppies you have as much right as possible to ask as many questions as you like

By doing lots of research on the potential owners! Meet them several times before they have their pup....ideally long before you even have pups! Go & see where thye live is suitable for your breed or if too far away then get another breeder of your breed to have a quiet peek for you! Find out who lives at home....is it their home or rented? Are they out at work alot or with other comitments....are their circumstances likely to change in near future? Do they listen to the breed advice you offer them....do you get a gut feeling about them....are they able to finance the specific feed/vet needs of certain breeds, especially a giant breed if you have one. Do they have similar ideas of responsible ownership to you? Do they have a suitable lifestyle/accomodation for your breed, have they owned a dog(s) before & if so, what happened to them? ie died/rehomed/sold on :( etc.etc.
Take it from me....its one of the hardest jobs there is & you MUST be strong enough to politely turn people away who do not meet your exact criteria.

Sorry to say but you cant always I done house visit to see where they are going met all the family talked indepth to the people tried my best to put them off so I was 100% about the people was always availible for advice you name it I covered it and I still had one of my boys brought back at 5 months completly F***** up all I can say is listen to gut instinct as I had a feeling about these people that I could not put my finger on but I could not say why so in future I will listen to nagging doubt even if it is unjustified try to remember these are your puppys and if you are unsure dont use the saying if in doubt leave it out sorry to be so pessimistic best of luck

Hi there there is no sure way of finding out if it is the right home but here is a few questions I asked my puppy buyers.
1 Is there someone at home most of the day?
( if they work more then 6 hrs then they dont get a puppy from me,the best are if there is someone at home most of the time)
2. Have you owned a dog befor?
If yes find out which breed ?.
3 Do you have any children?
I never let any puppy go to anyone who has children under 5 I dont sale toys!!!!
4 Asked is there a place near there home where the dog can be excercised?
5. Asked for there address and post code
Then i do a search www.streetmap.co.uk and type in there post code and see if it matches up with there address
Then when I meet them its down to gut feelings.
I let all my dogs meet the new owner and if they brush themselfs then its a no if thay are worried about dogs hairs on them then they wont like there own dogs on them!!
Then I see how they act with the puppys do they stand and stear or do they go down and play?
The ones that get down and play gets a plus!!!
When they are with you asked has many questions has you can think off.
New owners of bitches get more of a grilling I asked why they wont a bitch instead of a dog and listern for there answers if they say anything about breeding then you know they are not looking for a pet!!!(mostly)
These are just a few things that may help you out.
One thing I have learned if you put your pups in any papers like admag or of that sort you get all sorts ring you up spur of the moment puppys buyers.
My last litter all the new owners have come via the net and my web pages this way I know that they have taken the trouble to look up the breed first!!!!
At the end of the day it up to you to find the right homes for your dogs I say NO to more people then I say YES!!!!
Know your breed and tell the new owner not only to good bits of the breed but also the bad bits too I sort of put them of by telling all the bad bits first then moving on the the good bits of owneing this breed.
So far have never had a pup returned!!!!!
Hope this helps you out?
