Topic Dog Boards / Showing / should you withdraw from classes?
- By Rose F [gb] Date 31.08.03 12:59 UTC
If you enter more than 1 class and you come first in the 1st class would you withdraw from the others to remain unbeaten to be eligible for Bob/bis or would you enter the others as well?. My thinking is that if you dont win the other classes you would be unlikely to win bob/bis anyway?

Also does anyone know of a website where you can download entry schedules?

How I read it is that if a dog becomes eligible for Best in Show/Best Puppy in Show may be withdrawn from all other competition other than breed classes.

You wouldnt be able to withdraw from any of your breed classes
ie if you were in puppy and junior and won puppy you wouldnt be able to withdraw from junior BUT if the junior dog that beat you was a puppy he could go for best puppy,IF junior is 12 months+ you could still go for best puppy.
You can only withdraw from stakes and AV classes.

Hi Rose, as has already been said, you can not withdraw from a breed class; and to my way of thinking it's not worth withdrawing unless there is more than one judge involved. I have only ever done this once, the breed judge gave us BOB(only1 class for the breed). We then withdrew from an AV gundog class under a different judge and an AV class under yet another, but we were lucky that day, we did actually win Best in Show. All of this took place at a show NOT judged under the group system, so there is alot to take into consideration, before deciding whether or not to withdraw.
On reading this back, Iv'e made it sound rather complicated, certainly to newcomers to showing, so I hope I haven't confused the issue.

Hi Dawn - its Lee, Dexters owner!
Just a question about withdrawing from a class if you come 1st in a class - do you have to inform the show ring steward that you are withdrawing or do you just not enter the class? Just wondering - just in case!

I think if the person who's doing the AV classes is doing the BIS then you might as well go in the classes. If you get thrown out then you know that they don't like your dog, if you win brilliant!! I must admit years ago I used to withdraw. Unfortunately I don't have the opportunity of going in varities or BIS with my Spanish:d

You can't withdraw from breed classes but if you wish to withdraw from a AV class you should tell the Show Secretary or Manager or at least one of the committee who is maning the table at the time. They should tell the ring steward.

If you have entered say AV Puppy and you win and wish to withdraw from the AV Post Grad. and it is the same steward and the same ring it does not hurt to say you will not be entering as it stops them calling for you.

EDIT if the class you win is AVNSC think the same rule applies as it does in Breed classes you have to continue any you have entered and if you win enter the challenge/contest to win the BOB, RBOB and the BP. In fact that is a good way to tell if you can and if you can't withdraw. If there is a challenge then you can't, if there isn't then you can. Hope thats correct it has only just dawned on me :)

Hi Lee, on that one occasion that I withdrew, I informed the secretary and the appropriate ring stewards. You don't want to risk getting it wrong, because if you do happen to win BIS, you don't want to be disqualified after all.

To Answere your question it is simple, Thekennel club have rules and not many people read them. If you have entered more than one class in the breed then you have to compete in all other classes in the breed catorgory unless your dog develops a health problem and then you have to gain permission to withdrawer. That is the end of your showing for that day. If you have entered only one class in the Breed and then entered one or more of the variety classes and you win Best of breed you must withdrawer from any other class/es in varieties so that your eligability to compete is not in jepody. Those are the rules . I sometimes wonder how many tha answere on these boards have either read any breed standard or have attended any classes for stewarding. Try going to a kennel Club seminar for stewarding you'll learn all about it there

Hi Whippetman,
If you win Best of Breed there is no compulsion to withdraw from any other classes. It is entirely voluntary (the rules specifically say "may be withdrawn). It is the choice (and gamble!) of the exhibitor.

And different rules apply to group shows and non group shows, it is not that easy to understand.
