Hi.
My mums yorkie is being put to stud for the first time, the lady who has the little bitch says the dog is on her 9th day when first introduced.
The male has been introduced slowly and now on the 10, 11, & 12 day he was allowed to visit all day but although hew has sniffed her and seems to like her he as far as we know not mounted her?

She puts her tail to the side when he sniffs her rear but little else happens.?

is he not interested in mounting this bitch, maybe does not like her,?
I thought when he smells a bitch in heat you would have to struggle to part them..
He shows interest in the fields when he smells bitches and seems to try to mount
This lady who has the bitch is her first time at breeding her, she just wants 1 litter before she gets her spayed, likewise for my mums yorkie he is going to get neutered after this.

Can anyone tell us whats going wrong..
Oh forgot to say they are always at the bitches house , maybe we should take them to the studs terrority, he lifts his leg when in her house and ofetn urinates

Thanks for all advice

I'm sure you've done all your research into the hereditary health problems of the breed, and that neither dogs' ancestors suffered from slipping patella or Legge-Perthes disease. I read that there is an eye problem being investigated in Yorkies - they've both been checked for that, haven't they?

How old are these two Yorkies? I'm guessing they're both maidens, and that neither you nor the bitch's owner have attended a mating before. Some toy breds are notoriously difficult to get to mate, especially if they have been kept a lapdogs - they get scared of 'proper dog stuff'!

Certainly you are more likely to be successful if the bitch is off her 'patch' and onto the dog's. Confidence has a great influence on these things.

Hm maiden dog, maiden bitch & maiden owners spells disaster quite honestly.

The bitch should visit the dog especially if he is a maiden dog to give him confidence & managing a stud dog needs expert guidance by a knowledgeable person

It is not just a case of letting them "get"together

Sorry I would advise them not to breed from the dogs but that is just my opinion

Hi

I hope your mum is prepared for the possible dramatic change in her yorkie having used him at stud even once? Neutering won't curb his urges once he's had a taste for it, and, frankly, he may never be the same again....aggression, increased scent marking, wandering and being a complete nightmare if theres a bitch in season within 5 miles :)

Its not a case of whether he likes her or not, its whether he has it in him to do it and whether the bitch is ready or not. You are putting human emotions to a dog - it doesn't depend on whether they fancy each other or not!

If you are determined to go ahead then I strongly suggest you ask an experienced breeder to come and help you. Either of your dogs could easily get hurt, and the bitch is certainly at risk with all this inexperience. Failing that - get a damn good book and read it from cover to cover in the very least.

Chloe.

Thanks for all this advice, as for reading up on the subject I have .the only thing I am not sure of is if the bitch is at the correct stage for mating, but if she raises her tail for him is that her ready or near to?

I cannot speak for the bitch's owner, maybe we should just abandon the idea entirely, although i think she will try again the next season.
I think she should have went to the vet and got her checked for ovulation?
They both are sound and have no defects or hereditary problems.
She has a friend nearby who breeds shit-zu dogs and needs to speak to her more about the whole thing.

My mums yorkie is 3 years old , the bitch is 2. and the both are spoiled rotten, more so the little bitch.
She infact chases him and he sometimes runs away...

Starting to regret the whole thing...
Await your repl's.
Thanks

Your instincts are already telling you this is a bad idea...

Hereditary tests are not undertaken by the vet in a normal check-over... they are expensive, extensive, and can save a lot of problems and legal implications in the long run. In the current climate of compensation seekers you should be covered on all aspects of dog breeding, because its a frequent occurance that someone comes on here 5 years after buying a puppy and trying to blame the breeder for any illnesses!!

Personally, I'd drop it. I truly think your mum will regret using her dog even just once. The chances are that he will change and not be the same dog, and that would be terrible for your mum... plus, she will be equally responsible as the stud owner for the puppies, not to mention any extra expenses occured if he picks up an infection. Let the bitch owner do as she chooses...far better that you bow out at this stage and not be involved with irresponsible breeding :)
