Hi,
We have just got our pup and we were told to feed him four times a day by the breeder, 2 meals of cream rice with bakers puppy complete, 1 meal of just bakers puppy and 1 meal of dr john silver soaked in gravy with the puppy does love best but what the breeder gave us, is about to run out and we cant find it anywhere!
Does anyone know anything that just as good?
He does not seem to like the puppy one much, what else is good for pups to try?

Hi,
Bakers Puppy should be available at your local Tesco or Sainbury's, and Dr John's may well be at a Pets at Home or Jollye's. Have you tried searching on the internet for your nearest stockists? As you are no doubt aware, it is important to change a puppy's diet only very gradually (over a period of about two weeks) if you are to avoid stomach upsets.

HI, Bakers is full of colouring ( so I wouldn't feed it myself) and Dr Johns Silver is not a puppy food but a very low protein adult food. What breed and age is your puppy? If you are going to feed a complete diet get the best you can afford. Arden Grange is my choice for puppies. I personally wouldn't feed Bakers or Beta.

Thanks, it's hard to know what to do, the breeder told us what to feed and that we could change him over the week, if we wanted to.

He's a 8 week old golden retriever.( He's a big baby though)
We are going to see the vet, so we'll have to see what he has to say

Please dont feed your puppy Dr John Silver - its NOT a puppy food. Its hard to find stockists because it so inexpensive many shops wont stock it - not enough profit in it. Its a good food for maintenence - NOT GROWTH - for ADULT dogs that need a very low protein and fats. For proper growth puppies need a different protein/fats ratio. The Silver is only 18% protein and 7/8% fats.
Although we usually advise to follow the breeders advice - in my opinion you have been given poor advice and the sooner the puppy is on a suitable puppy food the better. It sounds like this breeder has reared the puppies on a thin shoestring to me. No offence intended, but why ask for advice if you are going to completely ignore it? The vet will almost ceratinly recommend Hills because they get commission from Hills. It is very expensive and not necessary for a puppy with no health problem. Though some vets recommend Burns Mini Bites which are excellent. Dont stint on rearing him well on the correct diet, it will reap great rewards for the future.
Dr John's phone number is 01707 367900 or www.gilpa.co.uk
They will tell you of stockists in your area - often Farmers Co-ops if you are in a rural area.
They may well do a puppy complete which would be worth considering. I haven't had puppies since I strated usung it - so I dont know. I would be wanting to give a puppy complete of at about 22-24% protein and 11% fats/oils. I feed Dr John Gold to my adult dogs and they do very well on it - but puppies need puppy food. :-)

Hi,
In my opinion Hills puppy complete is an excellent choice and my Goldens are fed
this as puppies up to 6 months-8 then I change to James Well Beloved. All do very
well on it.There is no cheap way of feeding puppies, however don't buy Hills from
my vets do buy it cheaper at shows try online.
Everybody has different views on what you should feed.I find its whatever suits
your dog and you.
However my 7mnth was also fed on some Pedigree Advance which had no problems
with and yet this would not have been my 1st choice food.
You need to find a good quality food epecially for that 1st yr and sometimes you
have to pay more.

Hi Briony
Just a quick question why do you start on Hills and then change to JWB and not feed JWB from the start ?

Hi,
I like Hills and I think in my opinion its excellent for puppies. However by 8 months
depending on the dog I change to adult food slightly lower protein. This IS JWB.
My dogs just seem to thive on it and do ok in the ring they seem to have lovely
glossy coats.
I know lots of people have different opinions but this works for us.I tend to watch the
dogs don't get too much protein as bad as too little for hip development.
Thats not to say there aren't other good complete foods :-)There is such a choice.

So is the Hills puppy food different in protein content to the puppy JWB ?

I could not tell you as I only use Hills puppy then change to JWB adult. The
only other puppy food complete is Pedigree Advance that I tried.
As I say this works for us.Not really thought about JWB puppy ??Is this what you use??

Yes have brought the last two girls up on it and they thrived on it. I didn't however use the junior food as wanted to have a reduced protein content for the same reasons as you have said!

Hi,
Perhaps need to make myself clearer,I happen to like Hills puppy but for adult food
prefer JWB this is why I change but If I got a pup that wasn't thriving on these brands
then I would use a different quality brand. Not had a problem as yet.
I wouldn't have thought JWB was lower protein ? but I couldn't honestly tell you.

Hi,
Dr John silver is excellent as a maintenance food. I feed Dr John (gold) to my border collies, and one of my GSD's. It's cheap and keeps them in excellent condition.
It really isn't suitable for puppies though....I'd reccomend Arden Grange...their food is very good, and high in protein etc. I have some of my GSD's on that too and they do really well.
I've tried Beta, and wasn't too happy with it......mind you, I've tried just about everything and haven't been happy!!
