I have just taken my dog for a walk on a gentle leader and it was not to bad but he keeps making really loud grunting noises like he's being strangled and I am getting really odd looks.
Anyone know why he's doing this and how I can stop it.

Hi, we use a Gentle Leader for Morse and have fiddled with it for ages. Check it is not too tight- it should slip up and down his nose and if the headstrap is snug the muzzle bit can be looser. If it rides up under his eyes its too tight - Morse can wriggle out of his any time hes stopped on a walk so I dont stop and take it right off for free running. Dont pull it - if you used a check method before this needs superhuman self control. You only need lift your hand to turn the head towards you.

Sounds daft but does he eat before going out and the noises be wind? If all else is well he could be protesting. Other people suggest leaving it on for meals so they have pleasant associations with it.

Good luck and if this is wrong dont worry someone else will be along to help:)

He pulls quite a bit on it and resists the gentle pull I give, I an not sure how to prevent this.
No its definately not wind its snorting noises coming from his mouth and his tongue is always hanging out from the corner, is this meant to happen he looks so uncomfortable.

Sounds odd! Our pup still pulled at first as he is very stroung , but once you get the knack of stepping /gently pulling sideways you learn how to use the Gentle Leader to your advantage in stead of walks becoming a tug of war.

Have you checked that the head collar is fitted correctly? What breed is your dog? If it has a short muzzle and the Gentle leader is sliding down and covering his/her nostrils then that could account for the noise. We had a Rottie and Dogue de Bordeaux in training classes who made lots of snuffling noises - and I noticed their Gentle Leaders kept sliding down their faces.

I have a springer, the nose piece is quite tight but you can just move it slightly up and down his nose but its not covering his nostrils or his eyes, the neck piece is high up on his neck. When we walk he is almost flat trying to pull sometimes and I thought this was not meant to happen.

we find pulling a dificult habit to break especially as first time dog owners who listened to rotten advice offered with authority! From my limited experience with our dog I think they get used to pulling and try it out whatever equipment used. Try and think of a Gentle Leader as a training aid and use the advice on How to Train ... Heel. I dont mean to be depressing but we have had Morse for 5 months today and he is just beginning to understand walking beside us and tries it out at the beginning of every walk. Funnily enough he can heel off lead fine -until he sees something interesting!:D:D
