I know this has been touched on but what are your opinions on programme for fleas. Sasha still itching I have frontlined her, changed her diet ,giving her cooling tablets, bathed her in JDS. Obviously this has been happening over a period of time. Then this morning as I was combing her through which was better than her riffing I found a big flea, shes seems glad I found the little sucker or should I say bitter. So please give feedback on programme. Ta very much.

Hi, have to say Frontline works for me, every 6 weeks. . Have you done any cats you own too? Haven't used programme, sorry. I tried Advantage once and that was useless imo.

I use Frontline spray, It's good! But I dont trust any of the spot on's. I'm not saying they dont work but after reading the do's and dont's on the old Exspot many years ago I threw it in the bin unopened! If it's not safe for me then it's not safe for my dogs.

Regards, John

What are these spot ons? I've just used frontline today in a version where you squeeze a small amount onto two spots on the neck. Is there a debate as to the safety of this?

Hi, programme will only make the adult flea sterile and not actually kill it on contact, however any flea eggs laid after treatment will not hatch. But dont forget the eggs and larvae that are on the carpets, bedding etc that would have been laid prior to treatment. These will still hatch, unless treated with a household spray such as staykill (available from the vets.) If the house is not properly treated then more adults will come through, some eggs may even remain dormant and wake up in the autumn - when the central heating comes on...personally I prefer frontline, you can see adult fleas drop dead almost immediately...The emphasis is on the house though - get a good reputable house spray, regardless of the adult flea treatment you use.

Thanks for your help. Ive used frontline spray on her but been long coated Im not sure it gets in there. Anyone else any views on the spot on, & does it work just dotting it on their neck. Ive a Shih Tzu. Bless her.

You could give the spot on a try i guess - suck it and see!! :) It may work for you or you might want to try the spray/pump again I used disposable gloves when I sprayed our dogs and worked it well into the coat, but as mentioned the house/environment is actually the important bit....give it a go.

I will not use spot ons particularly with a short coated dog; seen too many burns; I believe spray is safer, I use fresh garlic a lot and I spray my house with Acclaim and only spray my dogs about once a year if that.

Garlic is myth. Must admit never used the spot on myself but it is down to personal preference, speak to the vet maybe? If spot on's are causing skin burns on dog's then perhaps its safety should be reviewed?

Well if it is a myth I subscribe to it as I have found it keeps fleas and flies away from horses, dogs and humans and so have thousands of others!

Hi Tohme, its personal choice at the end of the day, all I know is that my horse, who suffered from sweet itch continued to do so for all the years i had her despite the garlic in her feed, I also know as an invertebrate specialist that it will take more than garlic to slow down/stop a flea life cycle - but thats just my opinion !! :)

I use programme. I was also told by the vet that it is not a conflict to use with Frontline, so we have a bottle of frontline to use in case of ticks.

I prefer the idea of making them sterile - this is personal choice. I know most people frontline - I'd prefer not to have any of them breed. In the 5 years we've been using Programme I have only ever seen one flea twice on any of my dogs.

A thread worth while for me any way. :) I had to take sasha to the vets last night shes caught her eye, nothing left in it. Got some drops got to go back for a check up on Fri. While I was there asked vet about spot on frontline, she uses it on hers,I was sold & put it on her last night & considering I couldnt find any, fleas that is one drop off on to the cream leather sofa, only the best for sasha (more prefered she says than the red fluffy one sarge has)..So back to fleas it seems to work instantly. Though I am impressed on how programme proformed for you. TA
