Hi,
I'm writing for my friend, Danny, he has a cross alsatian (male), and for some reason, when given the choice between bitch n dog, he choses to mate with a dog!... Is this normal for a mongral to be a bisexual, he does sometimes go for females, but mostly males, we are both worried incase he tries to mount a dog that will turn on him, he doesnt care if they have never met... someone have any training tips?... because he usually sees the other dog before us and we cant get lead on in time... If we do get to him, choke chain or not, he will pull, even hard enough that it forces him to rear onto his hind legs, the chain has hardly any effect, and we have checked its fitted properly...we are considering keeping the lead on, but it seems a shame to take his freedom away, as he is used to being able to run freely in the fields.
If you have any suggestions at all, we're all ears!
Luv Lea.

How old is Danny's dog? This sounds like a puppy who's getting too big for his boots, and is going to get a good telling-off one day soon!
Mounting like this isn't him trying to mate - this is normal hierarchical behaviour between dogs - but naturally some dogs aren't going to stand for it! (excuse the pun!)
Does Danny take the dog to training classes? It sounds as if that would be an excellent idea, and get his behaviour sorted out. This dog sounds almost out of control.
Good luck.

ALong with what Jean says - the choke chain isn't having any effect because the pain it excerts, and the excitment he's probalby experiencing during his 'playtime' will be releasing endorphines. If you need to man handle him try putting him in a harness, which is a much more effective (and less damaging) way of controlling your dog.......

Jean: I think he's abt 3-4 years old... this behavior is quite recent... I think he's been to training classes, but he should probably go again!.. on the basic obedience, he's better than my dog, but on the other side, he needs to be "tamed"...lol ;)
Digger: thx 4 the harness advice, i'll tell him :)

Hi there,
What a nightmare... and embarrassing too :( I definitely agree with Jeangenie that this is not seen as a sexual act in the world of dogs. It sounds like his dog has some dominance issues, and that could lead to serious confrontational situations when off the lead. I would recommend obedience classes as a necessity, (he may have to seriously think about seeing an animal behaviourist); this will not only improve the recall, but will strengthen their bond immensely. With some simple non-confrontational dominance and bond building exercises, he should see an improvement. I would keep him on the lead for the time being :( to prevent any situations. Abandon the choke chain; they are used as a quick jerk corrective tool. If he is pulling then all it will do is constrict around his neck. Has he tried a Lupi? They are a rope type harness that is used to prevent pulling and lunging. I would suggest taking a toy or treats with him on walks… anything to distract him :)
Has he thought about getting him castrated?
Good Luck :)
