Hello, I have been told by a breeder that it is OK to use a dog under one year old for stud, that has not had any health screening tests. Can anybody tell me if they use their dogs under one year if they are going to be at stud for most of their life?

The age is unimportant the test aren't, do not use that breeder.

Why would you want to use an untested dog? Just because you can use him that does not mean that he will not pass on any health problems he may be carrying. As you cannot score hips of a dog under 1 year old to me it is irrisponsible to actually use a dog until it is tested, in other words a year to eighteen months at the very youngest.

What breed? I think there may be one or two breeds, particularly the smaller ones, where hip scoring and eye testing are not the norm.

There are very few breeds that do not require eye tests, and small breeds should have their knees looked at to make as sure as possible that luxation is not a problem, under a year that is difficult to assess. Whats the hurry?
