Please could you provide me with some information on how i go about putting my three year old retriever up for stud, "Blue" has a lovely temperment and very genlte, confident manner, this is my reason for hoping to stud him. As i have never tried anything like studding before i am a bit lost as to what is the best thing to do next. How do i advertise "blue" ? and how do i know if they are a good match ? what expenses are involved as the stud's owner, and how is a sum for the stud arranged?

I would say go back to your breeder and have a chat with them , as they can advise you what lines are to complement your dog and which ones to stay away from.

I would also get all health checks that need to be done , done.

I think you would need to get him hip scored , but not sure about any other tests.

I would think that if it was the first to that you did put him to stud , it would be free of charge , as he is a maiden dog (no experience).

And you really ought to reconsider using him at stud , as his temprement my change forever , he may become frustrated , and may change from being the dog you once knew and loved , to a dog you dont really know at all.

If he was brought intended as a pet , keep him as a pet , really , he will be "none the wiser" for you not using him.

Providing that you can find someone who wishes to use him, make sure the bitch has experience and you will need to get some in who is used to handling a dog at mating to teach you how to deal with him and the bitch. Inexperience can lead to injury being done to the dog or bitch or both, and you can get bitten. If you do not know what you are doing and interfere to much the dog may refuse to perform altogether.

Even when you get through that bit you are still responsible for the pups that may be born both morally and in law.
