I keep looking at these in the pet shops but do they work, has anyone else bought these that can tell me if they are effective.

No one in my family has used one of these for about 20 years. I just can't bring myself to use one. I don't want to be touching it when I touch my dog. I'd rather pay the bit extra and get a monthly prescription from the vet for either frontline or programme.

We personally use programme because it sterilises the fleas so even if you do end up with a few about the place once they have bitten the dog they can't multiply. And honestly it's not that expensive.

Hi Sandie - I dont think they are considered very effective or hygienic! You should get a 'prescription' treatment from the vet (and also a treatment for the house to kill all stages of the flea life cycle) - you may find another posting of interest named fleas ewww (General - last posting 20th August)

I would never use a flea collar - years ago, we used them for our Lab x whippet, and she seemed ill for about an hour after we put it on, as if it made her feel sick :( :(

It did have a very strong smell, which faded after a while, but i would never use one again because i think it is probably unfair on the dog (unless they have been much improved) apart from being full of chemicals.

JMO :)

Years ago, before we knew anything about Frontline or any of the other vet flea treaments, we used to use a flea collar on our BC. It kept fleas off his head, but he still picked them up on the rest of him, so no they don't really work.
Does anyone use the Program injection on their dog??? How does it compare to Frontline??

I think the difference is that programme makes the fleas sterile whereas frontline pretty much kills them dead.?? So if you use programme you will still see adult fleas for a while but the eggs they lay will not be viable and therefore not hatch but you still need to remember the eggs that were laid before the fleas were made sterile by biting a 'programmed' dog so the house still needs treating - personally i prefer frontline...watch 'em die, then treat the house.
