Topic Dog Boards / Behaviour / Will my Cocker ever cock?

When do dogs 'normally' start to cock their legs? I haven't seen him really give it a go EVER!
P.s He's 6 months

As this is one of the least endearing male habits I would be pleased :D Seriously may dogs don't cok their legs until over a year old.

My Cavalier is just over 5 mths old and he doesn't yet, a Cavalier I had afew years ago sadly died at 16mths but he never did either. Maybe spaniels are just too lazy to cock their leg !

i have a 6 month old jrt he dont cock his leg either, some dogs dont do this till there older has my rottweiler i used to have didnt start cocking his leg until he was well over a year, some dogs might do it at all so i think it just depends on the dog,as for bitches not marking every where my bitch when i take her down the fields she dose little pees every where dont have a clue why,

Reply to Tumper73....
I have a GS bitch and for some reason she pees everywhere, she sniffs and sniffs then pees as if she is marking. She is 8 yrs now and only started this about 2-3 years ago???????? Don't ask me why.

its really strange cause my sister has 2 bitches and one of them dose the same thing, other people i chat with while out on walks have bitches but they dont seem to do this,i just wondered why some bitches do this must be just like males marking

Haven't a clue what is the accepted norm. As long as there is no medical/physical problems as a result of not 'cocking' I really don't mind how my dog wees! I find it really cute that my youngest still stretches out his back legs and just stands - he is now 20 months old and shows no sign of even trying to cock. On the odd occasion I have thought of 'helping' him by lifting a leg for him but I know he learns by observation - I've seen him copy things before off our older dog so if it was important to him I guess he'd copy 'cocking' as well with or without my help!

My parents have a westie who doesn't cock a leg, he does a handstand!!!!!!!! :) Seriously, it's fascinating to watch, don't know why he does it tho?
- By John [gb] Date 22.08.03 21:47 UTC
My old boy only ever cocked his leg if he thought there was someone watching right until the day he died!! The reason for leg cocking is for territory marking and the less dominant, the less leg cocking.

Best wishes, John

didn't know that one:eek:
My first dog (a bitch) used to do a handstand up trees, fence posts etc. to pee!! My latest little boy (10 mth Staffie) hasn't started to cock his leg yet. I'm sure he'll learn soon!!:)

I once had a Lab bitch, Lucy, who always marked over the top of where the older bitch, Mandy had been. Mandy never bothered unless she was about to come into season and then she would mark over where Lucy had gone so Lucy would try again over Mandy, then Mandy would try again over Lucy and so it would go on! Walks took at long time!!!!

Regards, John

hi sooz.
MOST males do cock, but, only on occasion, you will get a dog (male) that doesnt. not to worry. i would be rather hapy, actually!

Love the title:D My ickle Anton doesn't cock his yet but he's not 6 months until next week. His dad was about 14 months before he started cocking his and he does it for Spain now!!

My cocker Stanley is 6 and a half and has never cocked his leg !! My other cocker Rupert squats when he is really desperate to pee but cocks his leg the rest of the time ??
