Topic Dog Boards / Health / Westie? is it food or is it grass.

Hi everyone. I hope some of you can help me here cause i don't know what to try next.
I'm having problems again with Buddy's skin. This time last year i had him to the vet cause he had orange crusty skin on his nose and the front of his legs which he nibbled till they bled. Vet thought it might be too much protein and bread (cause he like abit of toast). Changed his diet and used prescribed shampoo and it eventually cleared up. His skin was lovely on Pal complete but his poo was terrible. After seeking advice on the soft poo and several trips to vet to get anal glands checked out i started feeding buddy Naturediet Lite which sorted the poo out but now i'm back to itchy scratchy skin.
What i'm wondering is

a) am i feeding him too much. I've been giving him a whole pack of naturediet lite 390g split into 2 meals.
He's a 17 mth old Westie by the way. Protein content is 7%. Oil 4%. Fibre 3% which is much less than Pal.
However i was'nt giving the same weight in food.
Buddy weighed 7.9kg when he started the new food 7 weeks ago. He now weighs 8.2kg.
OR
b) Could the skin thing be down to running/ playing in grass on our walks. I've been giving this some thought as skin flared up this time last year. Also with the orange crusts being on his legs and nose area making me think it's cause his nose is always buried in the grass. Skin everywhere eles is ok.

Sorry the posts so long and i really hope you can help. I feel i'm just going round in circles.

Hi
My next door neighbour has just has same thing with her cat....orange scabs....took to vet Sunday...and it's harvest mites, through running in the grass. They are about in August, and affect feet, head, face, ears.
One of my dogs had this a couple of years ago thro running over the fields.

Frontline gets rids of it, but the spray, not the spot on.Also some yellow ointment to rub on scabby nibbled parts.

Sami

Edited for PS

My 8kg cavaliers only have 1/2 to 2/3rds of a pack of NatureDiet a day each, maximum. Usually less, if they have had anything extra. I think it's very concentrated. It doesn't look a lot in the carton, but if you add a bit of warm water to it, it seems to expand! Perhaps it's the rice? Mine love it!!

Hi thanks for reply.
Buddy also loves Naturediet and would eat it by the crateful if i let him. It's a help to know that orange crusts could be caused by harverst mites although it means having to find somewhere safe for him to run around off lead without all the long grass. I only gave him 1/2 pack of food yesterday and he sat by his cuboard on and off all evening waiting for the rest. It's so hard not to give in. I eventually put alittle of the food into his kong and off he went happy as larry. Must learn to be strong and steadfast.
Thanks again.
