I am hoping to enter a Obedience show soon, does anyone know which class contains the temperament test?.

I think you'll find it's only in Novice these days. Unfortunately I feel that defeats the whole aims of the temperament test.

It is not really much of a temperament test anyway from what I can see

What or how do they acually test for temperament in obedience. Is is done by handling the dog or distraction or what. I'd be interested to learn more.

Temperament test
Dog to be on the lead, in the stand position, handler to stand by dog.
Judge to approach quietly from the front and to run his hand gently down the dog's back. Judge may talk quietly to the dog to reassure it. Any undue resentment, cringing, growling or snapping to be penalised. This is not a stand for examination or a stay test

It never was much of a temperament test Christine. When it first came in around the late 60's/ early 70's we were told by the obedience council that it would not be judged as a stand stay but the first time I worked under the "New" rules my old Mandy was marked down for taking a step forward wagging her tail! Whenever I was judging if I came away with all my fingers I marked the dog clear! (Showing me age here! no wonder I find Mondays a trial these days!!!!! )

It's Novice & Test A so If you are just starting & have never been placed or won at an Open or Limit show you will not have it in your dogs class

Unless you choose to enter Pre Beginners & Novice

Hi Katie, have just had another look at the rules and can still only see the Temperament test in novice! I'm looking at Annex "A" to Regs "G" correct at 1/7/2000. Have the rules changed since this time?

What do you actually have to do in 'A' and what are the marks spread

If you go to the obedience website, you'll find a link on the top left hand corner for 'G regulations', then click on 'Annex A to G Regulations'. There you will find all the details to each test and what points are allocated.

In A there is Heel on & Off lead Retrieve(dumbell),recall to heel,Scent & the stays

Good idea to look at the website as they have the marks etc

In A there is no extra commands allowed i any exercise unlike the 1st three classes were you can talk to your dog all the time except in the stays

TT was removed from A a while ago

The judges in ovedience can always penalize a dog that is nervous or aggressive via the working naturally part of the regs

Mind you I have always considered any too close present in retrieve etc to be unnatural ! & I was marked them !

We always considered that to be "Assisting the hold" and marked accordingly! But the "Working Naturally" seems to go by the board with dogs wrapped around the handler’s leg in heelwork! After "Retiring" from obedience and going into working gundogs the first thing I had to do was to push my dogs out wider to avoid falling over them!
