With so many dogs being stolen from gardens ,cars and just when someone is out walking I am beginning to wonder if breeders did not now charge exhuberant prices for their puppies whether there would be any mileage in stealing a dog to make a fast buck.
It is fast becoming a quick money fix than if they stole electrical items etc.
So for all of you who breed and sell why is the cost so high ? I can well appreciate vets bills escalting over the past few years but does that really justify £400,£500 or more?
I also believe that because the prices have soared the dreadful puppy farms will carry on selling at lower prices and ruin the lives of so many beautiful dogs.

Don’t think stealing an adult dog would be worth while unless it was a working dog. An adult dog without papers is only worth what you would pay at a rescue centre.

There are some breeds that may be stolen for illegal reasons purposes or, heaven forbid, their skins, but the idea that it is because a puppy costs £400 or £500 is not a front-runner. Anyone unable to manage that would not be able to pay the food and vets bills and should think very hard before having a puppy anyway, and should perhaps go for an older rescue dog.

From what I gather commercial puppy shops sell puppies at considerably more than £400 - £500 so I don't think that reputable breeders selling at even more of a loss that most of us do will work.

As Jesse says, puppies from the puppy farmers generally cost as much if not more than pups from reputable breeders.

There is a man in our local papers that every week has different pedigree breeds for sale at much much lower prices than is normal. This week it has been shitzu's usually it is westies and he always will deliver.I phoned him once and asked if he bred them, he said they were from a mate in Wales.I would say they cost between £200-£300.The trouble is people who want a westie and cannot afford maybe £400 will be stupid or naive enough to buy them.

That may be so, they then pay a fortune in vets bill or sad to say the pup will die. But what are the careful breeders supposed to do, subsidise the production pups for the general public. If every one kept their bitches in the conditions that the Welsh puppy farmers do and produce the number of litters from untested and uncared for stock then yes all breeders could do it cheaper and we would be back to the stage that we were when people often had to buy several pups before they got one that lived till it was 1 year old. Is that what you want. Surely it would be better to struggle on and get puppy farms and puppy dealers and retail outlets closed down.

Please get in touch with your licensing authority and ask for list of breeders within their area. Check if this person is included, if not keep all his adverts and present them to the council.

Hi, there are more than 1 puppy farm/trader in the Durham area. Longest established that I know is Portreys at Crook, he used to buy most of his pups in from Wales and Scotland, but in the last few years has been breeding too (he rang me once for info. on getting his Cavaliers into the extremely lucrative American market). Often has wanted ads in for youngish bitches, especially Cavaliers and Westies. A couple of years ago I got a lot of calls from people who had problems with pups bought from the Consett area, particularly weimareners and cockers , and have noticed a few ads in the ad. papers which could be him. However, in this weeks dog papers, in the article about the arrest of the man from Scotland shipping in loads of pups was a little bit about 2 guys from the Co. Durham area who have been arrested for something to do with pups.

Hi there when saleing puppies has a breeder you have stud fee traveling for a stud rearing and days off work to look after the new borns all cost.
I charge A lot for my puppys and have no problems in saleing them to the right homes.
Has for Welsh puppy farms they are every where one case a few years ago the RSPCA took 40 yorkies for a 10th floor blook of flats in London where the owner was breeding them kept in cages and only delivering the new pups the there new homes.
All new puppy buyers should go to the place where the mother and pups are not a shop or moterway stop or layby see where your new compaion is coming from speak and ask questions if you dont like the answers then go else where.
And has said on here pet shops do charge a lot more for a puppy the the avage breeder but you dont get the after care with a pet shop has you do with a breeder Im here for help and advice on all my dogs I sale for there LIFE and anyone else who needs help not only in my own breeds but others too.
