Hi,
Just wondering if any of you ever made any tests to prove if a bitch always ovulates around the same days of her heat in every heat. Is it possible except for a split heat to ovulate in one heat at day 3 and her next heat at day 18?? Just wondering if this is a possibility.
Thank you,
Justine

Although I've never done tests as such, I was always told that no two bitches are alike, and every season in every bitch is likely to be different. My last brood bitch stood for her first litter on day 13, but wouldn't stand for her second litter till day 18.
Hope this helps.

Excuse my ignorance, but from when do you start counting the days of the dog's season? Is it from the first show? How long do you need to keep them 'out of danger' if you do not want a mating to occur?

Hi Cheryl,
You start counting the days from when you first see a pink stain on a tissue pressed against her vulva (or the first drop of blood on the floor, whichever is earliest!). Then make sure you keep her secure (never unattended outside your house - not even in your garden) for
at least three weeks.
Hope this helps.

I always have done the same when I take a girl for an ovulation test, but one day when talking to the vet it came out that as far as he is concerned that the first day is the day after, so then you can say she has been in for 24 hours ( 1 day) - if that makes sense? Only mentioning it in case all vets think that way and then when you say 13 days to him - its 14 as far as they are concerned. I dont suppose it matters much though! She's not ready til she's ready anyway!
