Our 3 year old maltese has an anal abcess. She has been given antibiotics by the vet and we have been told to keep cleaning to help drain it. The vet says it will probably return and she will need the glands removed does anyone know anything about this operation, our vet says he has only ever done 10 of these ops (young vet)!

hi,
my cavalier had one of those last year, he was given the same medication...
my vet said if it returned in a short period of time then it would have to be operated on, however it has never returned.
has your's had this before ? if not i cant see why it would need surgery !
good luck.

One of mine had an abcess that burst.
He had a course of antibiotics and has never had a problem since.
That was at least two years ago.

My Papillon at present has an anal abcess, it burst, she is on anti-biotics and the vet says they usually cause no more problems, just have them emptied from time to time.
Dawn.

Thanks everyone hopefully it will not come back, she has had it for a week now and it is still weeping dispite twice daily bathing. We are taking her back to the vets next week, so we will see what he says.
