I,ve had my bulldog for nearly 3 years now and am eager to have his pup. My friend has a bitch who has just come into season and has asked me to breed with her. I have no problem but would like information on how to go about it. Thank you....STUART

Stuart

I don't mean to be rude, but the very fact that you are asking that question tells me that you and the dam owner are not yet ready to breed. Have you checked for compatible lines, etc.

Go back to your breeder and ask him for advice.

Is he a big show winner, if not, why consider breeding from him at all. If he is a show winner then there are lots of Bulldog people who will give you advice I'm sure.

As for the actual mating, have you ever even witnessed an assisted mating. You should do this first. It is not an easy job and best left to the experts (of which I am NOT one).

My advice is to look into it in more detail, do a search of breeders and ask them questions, ask at shows how others started, discuss puppy aftercare with the dam owner (how much do they know about it), etc.

As I said I don't mean to be rude but these are my thoughts.

With respect
Norm

hi,
i have bulldogs, although i have never bred them - if i had i penny for everytime i got asked wether i am going to breed them i would be a very rich woman !
Bulldogs have to be assisted when Mating for which you will have to cover the cost of - and from what i understand an assisted Mating is not cheap.
it takes at least 3 strong experienced people to do this - and being as you sound a bit of a novice i would not recommend that you try doing this yourself , it would not be safe for the dog or the bitch in question.
and are you willing to take pups back - if they fall on hard times? it is your responsibility as well as the person that owns the bitch - you are responsible for all pups born.
And rearing pups - and looking after mom is extremely hard work. This is not just Bulldogs - but any breed of dog.
And you may also have to cope with a personality change in your dog, after he has been used for stud, which would not be easy for you.
Jane.

ps - he may be too old for stud work now anyway at 3 years - i understand bulldogs are used for stud as early as 10 months old - this is what i was told by a very reputable breeder of Bulldogs.
