When you are first starting out showing do you enter everything or are you more selective ?
Do you look to see who the judge is or do you just enter for the experience??
Do you chose mixed or breed shows ???
I keep changing my mind over entries !!

When I first started out I would go to any show that had breed classes, we don't have many. If your breed has lots of classes, then the nearest ones whilst the pup is young plus any breed club shows you can get to and if you are doing champ show those as well.
As you get more experiance them you will pick and choose judges but until you know if they like your dog and you like the way they judge you wont know. I recon on 1 1/2 hours for a open show and up to 4 hours for a championship show or a breed show. Mind you some times it is much further and you will need to stay overnight.
If it is a pup you are showing then don't forget the AV & Stakes classes they can be good fun.

Your correct about AV classes and you can enter any that your dog is eligible for, and stake classes are also AV classes but there is usualy a money or prize available for the winners in most cases from 1st to 5th place.
If you have a breed class for your dog then you must enter that as well as AV or Stake classes. If you do not have breed classes you can just enter the AV classes. If you have breed classes but no breed puppy class you can enter a puppy into a AV class if you prefer, rather than, or as well as, one of the higher breed classes.
