- By swaranjeet [in] Date 11.08.03 11:21 UTC
Hi.

Can anybody tell me whats the target weight for 20 week old lab puppies. One male one female ?

Should the female weigh less ?

Thanks a ton in advance

if this is any help i have a 17 weeks GSD she weighs aroun 17kg.
I would expect the female to weigh less as the boys have a bigger bone structure

Thanks. Well I have a male AND a female and at twenty weeks the male is weighing 16kg(35lbs) and the female 14kgs(31lbs).

I had a male lab before and going by what I remember of him when he was their age, these two seem underweight AND undersize !! Should I be worrying ?

Hi, we recently had problems with our golden lab, he is just over 5 months and had started limping, we took him to the vet who said that we had been over feeding him, he did weigh 23kg at the time which apparently is far too much, he is a big lab anyway and we just got caught out accidently, the limping was because he was growing too fast in his growth plates for his bones to catch up. Two weeks later and he still limps a bit and we have cut his food down, however he is still big

And I'll add the weight of my Golden Retriever. He is five and a half months old and weighs 27kg. He is not overweight. It's best to go on the condition of the dogs rather than us telling you that they should be a particular weight. If you run your hands down their sides, can you just feel their ribs without poking? If so, then they are about right. If you can't feel their ribs, then they're carying a bit too much weight; if the ribs are too easily felt, then not enough.
HTH,
Sarah

Clearly all of you have labs that are heavier than mine. They look smaller than their age. They will be 5 months old on theis 22nd and they are weighing 35 and 31 kgs for the male and female. What can I do ?

Incidentaly, they dont look skinny, nor do their ribs stand out. The male looks fleshier though .

My worry is not that they are over weight rather it is the other way around. No, I cant see them as being skinny though. The female passes the test you give and the male is fleshier. They are just smaller !!

Are there standards for their height as well ?
- By Jeangenie [gb] Date 13.08.03 11:24 UTC
The only correct weight is the one that is right for the individual dog. Some 22" labs will be skinny at 60lb, others of the same height will be overweight. It very much depends on the build and muscle bulk of the dog.

Heightwise, I believe labrador dogs should be 22 - 22 1/2 inches, and bitches 21 1/2 - 22 inches.

Hope this helps.

I have weighed my GSD pup today and i think i got the previous weigh wrong as she is 18 weeks and weighs 20.6kg. So i think that you lab is possibly under weight maybe you should check with your vet the other thing is have you wormed recently

Don't panic, they are only babies yet.

As long as their ribs aren't vanished in rolls of fat, I wouldn't worry. At 5 months they have a lot of growing to do & their figures will change beyond recognition.

Mine were 18Kg, 20Kg and 19Kg at 20 weeks. I was told to diet Taz, and Ash is a skinny wretch. They are now 6 yrs, 5yrs and 15 months, and have all settled out at around 31'ish Kg. Taz still looks small, but he's full of muscle.

If you think they need a bit more flesh, either up the food they get or add in some tripe which is good for "fattening", and very good for them.

Hi everyone- just a quick question. Are you labs show type or working. I'm guessing they're show type due to their weight. Just like people, they can be sooo different from pup to pup. My vet says that as long as they are not too well covered (eg, rolls of fat!) most pups will even out as adults. The difference between show and working type weight can be quite large so. My working bitch is 5 1/2 years old and weighs 23.5 kg and my dog pup is 17 weeks this Thursday and weighs 15 kg already!. Don't worry too much-enjoy them.

Giving the weight of working, (Or for that matter any) Labrador can give a false impression. My Anna is also 5 1/2 and has no an ounce of fat on her. I was in the vets with her a couple of weeks ago and as usual she was weighed. As I stood beside the scales in walked this big fat black male. The rolls of fat bounced up and down as he walked! I could not resist a glance at the scales to see what he weighed, 31kg! My trim muscular bitch had just turned the scales at 35kg!!

The only way to tell if a dog is fat or thin is the finger test

Best wishes, John

i goto agree with the finger test.i think too many dogs are overweight these days.i think overfeeding is just as bad as underfeeding.
for my dogs because they are large dogs i like to keep them so i can feel the ribs and keep them lean till about 18 months.they have all the time in the world to fill out and put on weight after that so why overfeed while so young.just my thoughts on it.
ps, kidda swaranjeet teek tahk?

Murph's been weighed at the vets today...35kgs!
He's got a lot of muscle and no fat thouhg. he's nine months old and about 22 inches tall.
My feeling is that his growth is slowing down now.....she says hopefully!:D
