We are in the process of planning and getting everything ready with a view to buying a labrador puppy. The books we have read seem to have conflicting views about whether a bitch or dog make `best` pets, some say that a dog makes the most faithful and obedient pet and the others say a bitch does. Has any one got any ideas on this?
We were wandering about getting a bitch only for the main reason that we lost our 2 `old men` last year both aged 16 and we didn`t really want another male dog.
Thanks

Your last sentence summed it up - if you don't want another male dog, get a bitch!
I've got both (2 of each) and I will never have another male........

It is nothing short of a personal choice which no one can make for you. I had dogs for years then had my first bitch. Since that day I have never even considered having a dog! But, as I said, that is a personal thing and if everyone felt the same dogs would die out in one generation!

Why?
Cathy. :)

To be honest, although my boys are truly delightful, just as loving, loyal and affectionate as the girls, they are harder work! They are quite happy to roam further afield (often several fields! ) when they are offlead - the girls never go further than about 50 yards away - they have cocked their legs and annihilated every green leaf in the garden below 18", my herb garden is out of bounds for culinary purposes, and they cannot be trusted near any vertical surface...

yeah, i have to agree... i probably won't go for another male. Willis is fantastic, but Phoebe is so much easier.
My boy is the easy one, never goes far and so lovable but my bitch disappears frequently for ten mins or so - we are working on it but she is nearly 6 now and still does it sometimes - so I would have a dog next but I don't think it is as easy to calll as that, depends on the breed and individual temperament etc etc etc.
Our problems in choosing a sex for our next dog, a cattle dog, is that they are a generally dominant breed and I already have 1 of each, so it is really a case of who do I upset the most, my little bit lairy bitch or my quiet but not a pushover dog
Decisions, decisions!! That said if you have no dog already, just choose what you like, I find seasons a pain as I train my dogs so I would personally go for a boy
All the very best
Hayley
Sorry for garbling, not a lot of sleep, still very humid here!!!
