Topic Dog Boards / Health / Smelly dog?? Urgent

Hi everyone

I know someone who has a young male who over the last 2 weeks or so has had quite a strong smell to him? She is worried as the only time that she has noticed this in a dog was when one had cancer.

I've asked whether the dogs skin, coat is oily and it isn't. Anal glands seem fine. Dog seems happy enough in himself. Any ideas?

When mine had cancer I did not notice that they smelt different.

What sort of smell? Peardrops type smell is indicative of Diabetes, if a dog (or human) is fed garlic it can come out though the pores (the smell, not the garlic before any smart*** comments :) )

What are his ears like - dirty ears can be smelly (yeast or mite infection)

Doggy smell - urine getting onto coat if he is not cleaning himself up properly

Can't think of any others at the moment

Please let me know how he gets on and what sort of smell it is (do I really want to know this :D)

My friends last cocker used to absolutely reek. It turned out that the crease of skin on his lower lips was causing the trouble, they had to bathe them regularly and put cream on. Trouble was he was absolutely unmanageable and they couldn't do the necessary as he would attack and bite them. He had to be sedated at the vets on a regular basis so that he could be treated. The smell was very pungent and slightly sweet - like something rotting  :(

Has he rolled in fox pooh maybe? This smells ...ughh but can be cleaned up BY RUBBING IN TOMATO SAUCE on to the coat then washing off with FAIRY LIQUID, the green one.

My MIL's dog had a horrible smell which she couldn't track down. So off to the vets they went, to discover that the dog had eaten a stick and a bit of it had got stuck at the back of her mouth somehow. It had been there for a while and had started to decay, hence the smell, but it was very hard to spot the stick, the vet nearly missed it and initially the smell was not obviously coming from the dog's mouth.

Anyway, stick was removed, smell disappeared and the next 6 months were spent training her not to pick up sticks! :D

I hope you find the cause soon.

Has she recently changed his food? Sometimes some foods can make dogs smelly (both through the skin and gassy)

Thanks everyone, think that maybe he was bit by another dog and although the wound looks clean he is still smelly.
