Topic Dog Boards / Health / Third Eyelid Operation
- By rachaelparker [gb] Date 30.07.03 08:04 UTC
Yesterday Darcy had her third eyelids cortarised (sp)

Has anyone else had this done, apparently the need for it is quite common in labradors

Did anyone else look like their eyes had been butchered???

THe vet said it looks worse than it is but it nearly made me cry when I picked her up

She was whining and crying all night
Her eyes are all weepy and they look SO sore

Poor thing also developed wet exsma (sp) on her face as well!!!

She really is in the wars at the moment

Hi Rachel
Oh poor Darcy.
Her eyes are probably still very puffy, it is so coon after the op. I have done a fair few of these ops, and each time, the dog resonds differently. It probably irritated her eyes more than some ( but less than others).
I presume she has some painkillers, Rimadyl? and possibly some drops to put in after a few days?
See how she goes, but the swelling should calm down.
Just lots of TLC required.

how long do you think its likely to be before she begins to look normal and we can take the buster collar off

she was supposed to be going to the dogsitters on Saturday for 2 weeks while we move house
but I'm not sure if its fair for her to go while she's still got the collar on!
The other dogs are very playful and she's used to bounding about when she's there

What do you think??

Do you know if wet excsma (different wrong spelling) is contagious between dogs??
and how long on her before the risk of it spreading on her is reduced???

she has a solution put on twice a day and then cream
she is also on antibiotics and eyedrops

Hiya
Wet ecsma isnt contagious, dont worry. It is a nasty red, sore, moist patch of skin on the dog...but it wont be passed on.
Different dogs vary on the amount of time they need the collar. I would say after a few days you could take it off, when the redness and puffiness has gone down and yo can see the eye fairly clearly, then you would be fine to take itoff.
All dogs heal differently. Some quicker than others..You could try her without the collar after a couple of days and keep an eye on her...if she shows any signs of itching then put it back on..but if she seems generally ok with it...then see how she goes without. After applying the cream for a couple of days, you should see a pretty dramatic change over the first few days.

See how she goes...Is the dog sitters anywhere near where you are/are moving to? If so, then she could be ok to go..and you could pop in to check her eye ( best for you to do it, in case the dogsitter isnt sure what to do)
Good luck...Im sure she will be fine.

Oh..I would be careful for the time being of rough play with other dogs...if one of them knocks her eye...she will bein a lot of pain.

yeah the dog sitter is only down the road!!!

so I could pop in on a regular basis but the problem is they do nothing but rough play!!

I suppose I could ask them to separate her but she would absolutely hate that.

Maybe she'd be better at home, even though I'd be so busy!!

I just dont want to do now. Am quite annoyed becasue I told them about her going away and suggested we leave it until we were in the new house but they said she'd be fine.
Now they're saying its going to take a few weeks for her to recover!!!

Am going to get some light sedatives tonight !!!
She was up all last night, crying and whining and trying to get the collar off so she could scratch her face
Hopefully the antibiotics will start working soon and she'll start to improve

I just feel so guilty. I wish I hadnt put her through it, I think eyedrops every day would have been preferable

Her eyes will be very sore and yes, they will look bad but you will be amazed at how soon they improve. Try to avoid the rough play as far as you can but remember this, If she feels like playing then she can't be feeling too bad!

Best wishes, John

would you recommend I just dont take her to the sitters then???

she has been playing with us today, fetching her ball and such like.
But I'm worried even if she doesnt want to play the others wont leave her alone and I think she'd hate to be separated at the sitters
sh's just too used to going there to play
The only problem is that would mean she'd be on her own at home.
We're just too close to our house move for me to stay at home with her!!

How soon would you say the rough play would be safe,
she was supposed to be going to the sitters for 2 weeks.

Rachael - does she have a crate you can take to the sitters?
- By rachaelparker [gb] Date 30.07.03 12:41 UTC
Yeah she has got a crate, I suppose I could take that with us

She's not a big fan of it but I suppose at least she could have some quiet time in it
- By John [gb] Date 30.07.03 11:49 UTC
Personally I'd rather have her home for a couple or three days just to let the healing start. Even if you have to go out and leave her the quiet rest will do he no harm. After a few days she will feel more like the general hubbub than at present. Let's face it, if a dog does something which hurts her she could quite understandably be a bit snappy about it and who could blame her?

she had the op done yesterday morning and isnt going to the sitters until Saturday morning

Would that be okay???

Or should I leave her on her own over the weekend and drop her off on Monday??

or even longer than that

Sorry for all the questions am just desperate to do the right thing for her
- By John [gb] Date 30.07.03 14:15 UTC
You will need to play it a little bit by ear. See how things develop. If come the weekend you can maybe take her to the dog sitter's for a few minutes and see how things go you can either bring her home or leave her depending on what you see. The operation is not in a particularly vulnerable spot (although eye op's are never to be taken lightly) so she could well be ok by then. Again, a lot would depend on the other dogs present and how they play. Being with a kindly old maternal bitch would be different to a boisterous puppy!

Thanks for the advice everyone!!!

Will see how she is by Saturday becasue the other dogs are all puppies so very playful!!

She seems to be perking up already, it just still looks so terrible

I darent take her out in the street am afraid she will give the kids nightmares :D

Will let you know how she gets on!
- By steph n millie [gb] Date 30.07.03 12:25 UTC
Hi Rachel..sorry for the while to reply..was out with the dogs....
I think you would be best to keep her in for a few days, ligh excersise, with you as opposed to other dogs. Play ball as suggested.
You could keep her with you as the healing process starts, then maybe, you could take her to the sitters a few days later than planned. As I think John said..the rest of being on her own wouldnt do her any harm....she needs rest to get better.
Dont feeli guilty, it needed to be done and in a month or so, when there is no trace of the op, you will be very pleased you had it done.

Okay everyone realise I am probably the most paranoid owner ever bt one of Darcys eyes is healing fine and already looks much better, but the other one isnt and it has gone cloudy. I know its not but it looks similar to a cataract(sp)
Could it just be the ointment sitting on the eyeball or should I be concerned???

I rang the vets and they just fobbed me off a bit.
I think they think I'm a real hyperchondriac because I have rang them a couple of times I know
They could be right :)

Just worried about my little girl!!
- By steph n millie [gb] Date 31.07.03 12:10 UTC
I wouldnt be worried just yet.
Watch to see how it goes, but it could just be that one eye took more of a bashing than the other (if you know what I mean) during the op. If one had been a bit more complicated, or even if it is just that one of them is healing slower. Check to see if she has sight through that eye though.
As I say, just keep an eye on her..after a couple of days, if you see no improvemeent, then a quick trip to the vet wouldnt be a bad idea, just to double check.
I hope that in herself she is a bit more cheerful. Eye ops are always nasty as they are so fiddly and in such a sinsitive, complex area. She could do with lots of rest and love and hopefully she will be on the mend before you know it.
x
p.s, it could be that that eye is having a reaction to the cream. If it does persist, your vet may change what she is on.

Thanks.

Just always need somebody else to tell me I'm doing the right thing

JUst got too worried last night and took Darcy to the vets, turns out she's got a huge ulcer covering most of the front of her eyeball

She has to go to the vets every 24 hours now to make sure it is shrinking with the medication rather than growing becasue otherwise she's got to go in for another operation!!!!!!!!!!!!

I cant believe this!! This is the last thing we needed at the moment. And she really is in quite a lot of pain with it.
Apparently it could take up to 3 weeks for it to heal! And she's to keep her collar on the whole time!

Does anyone know if its okay for her to play with other dogs with it on
WE really really need her to go to the sitters, things at the house are pretty desperate now!
She was supposed to have the collar off on Monday but unless the ulcer has dramatically reduced she'll have to keep it on.

What do I do???
- By dizzy [gb] Date 02.08.03 11:25 UTC
ive not heard of this op, what is it for, ? why is it done, sorry but ive never ever heard of it,
- By LJS Date 30.07.03 12:23 UTC
Poor old Darcy.

I agree with John and would keep her at home if you can as she will still be sore and may not have as much patience.

I am sure she will be fine.
