Hi there..To start off with my husband and I recently adopted a beagle mix puppy around the age of 10-12 weeks. We already had one other puppy that is about 6 months. We are having a very hard time house training the beagle. We have a crate for him and he has no problems with it except for the fact that he urinates in it and then layes in it. I have never heard of this before. We take him out frequently and yet he still urinates in the house, sometimes right after we have taken out. It is getting very frustrating because the whole crate thing is not working. If anyone has any advice please help. Thank you.

Could the crate be way too big? It should be big enough for him to stand up, turn around, sit, and stretch out laying down and thats it. Take him to the same spot outside and use a command word to go like go pee, hurry up and do this even when he is going (keeping him on lead can help), always go out with him. Then reward as soon as he is done. Do not allow any free time at all in the house unsupervised. Make sure u clean the kennel out real good to get his smell out of there. Most dogs will not eliminate where they eat so u can also start feeding him in his kennel, and put toys in there. This way he will not see this as his bathroom area. I would also suggest keeping him on leash in the house so where ever u go he goes to. When he goes to go pee in the house/kennel make a loud noise (clap ur hands, shake can) and so No scoup him up and say outside go pee/hurry up. The loud noise is to stop him from finishing where he is so u have time to run him out. If he had an accident in the house do not punnish him or clean it up in front of him act like nothing happened and no big deal. Good luck and hope this helps some :)

The crate we have is an adjustable one so no..It's not too big. The thing that get's me is that everything you just told me is the exact same thing the vet said and it's what we've been doing. He whines after he has already peed in his cage and it is too late. We have been trying to break him of that by taking him out constantly but he seems to be doing it in the mornings when we are asleep.

He is way to young to hold it all night. Is the crate in your room? If not then bring it into your room. This way you can hear him when he wakes up then you can scoop him up and straight outside. I had to get up all hours of the night to take my puppies outside to go, sometimes I would be standing out there for 20 min till they did both. I now have 5 dogs.....lol :D Mine didn't start sleeping through the night and holding it all night until they were between 5 months and up, just depends on the pup. Then as soon as they were holding it all night first thing first was to take them out before I could go. Just like potty training a child it can take any where from 6 months to a year to have the lil one fully house trained.

Good luck :)

Hi sugarplum, My scwt pup did the same but also done No. 2s' aswell, which was very nasty to wake up to. We tried all the suggestions mentioned but didn't really work, we were then told it becomes habitual behaviour and was advised to get Repel-All by Shaws, which should be in all good pet stores. Just spray inside the crate on the paper, and the smell takes the odour away of their own eliminations, it has worked for us, hope it does the same for you. Good Luck and hang in there.

Hi
I have a 14week old Bichon she ia going to bed in her crate about 10.30-11pm sleeps through till 6-6.15am than yells like crazy I jump up like lightening to get to her, she has always soaked the paper & generally done a poo also on the paper, I am hoping this will stop as she gets older? am I doing anything wrong or is this natural behaviour & do puppies just stop wetting/soiling the crate as they mature? House training is another problem, its basically not improving, she goes out will sometimes wee & othertimes come back in & wee. I am in & out like a yoyo. Any suggestions? Thanks Pauline
