My Rhodesian Ridgeback has had summer bald patches on her sides for a few years which don't seem to bother her but are unsightly. By chance my friend's Rhodesian Ridgeback (unrelated and several years younger) is now starting the same condition.
QUESTION: is this common within the breed? if so can anyone tell me the remedy? my vet said he can do tests to ascertain what the exact cause is to provide possible treatment - but I did not want to put her through unecessary stress for an apparently cosmetic condition.

Two causes which spring to mind are hormonal or under active thyroid. If hormonal then there is not a lot you can do but if thyroid then a blood test will let you know
