Hi Everyone, Could you please help, can anyone give some information on Pancur, I know their have been a lot of debates about this worming product, am I right in thinking this product is being investigated by the Golden Retreiver Society, I'll tell you why I am asking this, a bitch I bred several years ago has just welped her first litter, 1 week early, now the ladies vet gave this bitch pancur worming products a week before the bitch welped this litter, she now has 2 healthy puppies, but, one very sick puppy, I did not know until to-night that pancur had been given, I will not say what my comments were, but I am angry, could I be right in thinking this pups problems could be related to the bitch having been given pancur just before she was due to welp, all the puppies are underweight, so have definately been born too early. If I had known pancur was involved I would have told the bitches owner not to use this product, I personally do not use it, the pups are only 1 week old. and we are concerned for the sick one who had a fit 2 days ago. Please can anyone give some advice.

Irene - I was drawn to the post by the name Pancur as our vet has just sent us a reminder to go and get more wormer for Bonnie and it is Pancur that it mentions.
Cannot remember the name of what she was given before (it was granules).I do know that the vet didn't give us the worming syrup that Jean had been giving her.
What do you use for your dogs and do you get from the vet?
Hope the sick pup improves.

I use Panacur on all my dogs (Griffons) with no ill affects at all. I also use it as per the instructions on pregnant bitches, ie a small dose each day starting at day 40 of the pregnancy until 2 days after birth and have had no problems with the puppies. I start the puppies on it at about 3 weeks, once again without any problems at all. As far as my dogs are concerned I have found nothing better or more easy for them to take. However, I have heard that some Goldies don't do as well on it.

Yes, the Golden people are investigating, as they've had problems, as have flatcoat people. However, I don't think anyone has pointed the finger at the worming of the bitch in pregnancy. The problems have mainly arisen with the second worming of the pups at around 4-5 weeks of age.

I give my lad Panacur granules twice a year to no ill effects so far (touch wood).

I have always used it on in whelp bitches with no problerms. I also had no problems in my first two litters when instructed by the vetto worm at 3 to 4 weeks, and again before leaving me! In 1997 there was a promotion, and I bought the bottles with the manufacturers instructions to worm at 3, then 5 and then 8 weks. I had terrible problems after the 2nd worming, with terrible diarhoe! The pups only gained 8oz instead of the normal 1 1/2 pounds! A friend in the same breed had to have one of her pups in the vets at this age on a drip, it had very nearly died. The following year the same bitch of mine was bred from, with same size litter. I went back to worming at 3 to 3 1/2 weeks and at 7 weeks with no problems whatsoever, and this time at 5 to 6 weeks the pups gained 1 1/2 to 2 pounds in weight. The 3 litters I have bred since have also had no problems with this protocol.
Incidenatally the bitch i kept from the 1997 litter always went off her food at each monthly worming, and has remained somewhat petite up to her mother and Grandmother, her daughter is also bigger than she is. She was and still is very picky at times, and never has a scrap of excess weight, most people think she is a puppy. She reared a very healthy litter of 9 very good sized pups at the end of 99, whelping them in under 3 hours, 4 days early. they all thrived, and were average to large for the breed. She was wormed in pregnancy, and the pups at 3 and 7 weeks.

I use panacur to worm my bitches from day 40 of whelp until the puppies are 2 wks old and have suffered no ill effects with any of them.
The thing with Panacur is that it will dissolve any worm infestation which is why you occassionally get diahorea it's the worms. We use it for our parrots for this very reason as many yrs ago when we had to dilute it oursevles for the birds we found that other wormers killed the birds if they had an infestation due to the blockage the worms caused in their digestive system. It is also very good for respitory worms too especially Lungworms that puppies tend to pick up in the garden from slug and snails slime or eating them.
Hi Schip
I have lovebirds and have been thinking it is about time I wormed them - can you give me any details - can I put it in their food or do I need to catch the little ****'s and force it down their throats <g> and at what sort of quantity
With regard to worming pregnant bitches I have had no problems at all, but I find that I had to give the puppies slightly less than is specified or they get the runs which takes a few weeks to dry up. Less not more seems to be the rule with (Dobe) pups

You could always put it in a cartridge and fire it in from a 12 bore Christine! Never fails!!!

Thanks J!!! I don't think!
The only advantage to this method I suppose is that they would never bite me again whilst I was handling them or take chunks out of each other

We now use 'biozine' for worming the parrots as you can just mix it in their water for a couple of days - far easier and less stressful for all concerned especially with Lovebirds - oh the painful memories are flooding back lol.
email me if you have any probs getting hold a powdered wormer and I'll send u some.
