I have just acquired a dog 10mnt of age who is already my best friend after only
5 days, however, I am having problems in the potty training area. Jake is already the love of my life and I have had many skips over the last 28
yrs. Being a kennel dog does anyone have input as to tips on how to get it across to him this is his HOME and not a kennel. We don't have a problem during the day as he loves his doggy door. But, the night is another story, he is my constant shadow and does not want to do anything without being by my side
I can of course relate because of being penned up all his life
but, I would like to nip this in the bud. So far my only course has been to clean up
the wet spots and tell him he has been a bad boy, then pick up the rest place it out side to show him that is where it is supposed to be.
any tips would be greatly appreciated.
Thank You,
Vickie

Back to basics. Treat him exactly the same as you would a new puppy. You have to show him where you want him to go and really praise him a lot when he goes in the correct place. One thing you must stop doing is chastising him when you discover that he has gone indoors overnight. He may have had that accident many hours before you discover it and will not associate his 'crime' with your displeasure. He will assume that you are telling him off because he is greeting you! If you catch him in the act, that is another matter. But anything you do not see him do, must be ignored. It may take a little while for the penny to drop, but I am sure he will learn very quickly. It is down to you to teach him. Good luck

You will probably find it more difficult to train yourself not to show displeasure by voice or body language than you will to get him clean.

Make sure the first thing you do when you get up is (having covered yourself decently) go and let him out - then go and use bathroom whatever yourself as he will probably have been used to going as sson as he wakes up or whenever he wants to and if he hears you moving around nature will take over.
