Topic Dog Boards / Feeding / What should I give a dog with collitis?
- By westielover2 [gb] Date 10.07.03 12:39 UTC
I have a 6year Old rescue Westie He was fed scraps in his previous life but now he's on a proper diet he has Collitis.
The vet has prescribed him Salozopyrin for life and also Hills ID however he only has to have a small mouthful of anything else and he gets an attack lasting 3 to 4 days.
Recently however the Hills ID doesn't seem to be working so well and he seems to be a little runny alot.
Has anyone else been in this situation and what is best.
Someone on this forum said Naturediet lite I've bought some but don't know where to start do I start him on it and take him off the ID altogether not sure what to do any help would be great.

Hi,

Someone I know has had success with the new Wafcol Salmon & Potato complete food for dogs with sensitive tummies. Might be worth a try, although obviously you don't want to be trying too many different things and making situation worse .....

Hi W/Lover, sorry to hear about your dog, nasty thing colitis! A goldie who used to board with me had the same problem, he couldnt eat anything except the hills without getting an attack. He was elderly & getting very depressed & stopping eating so his owners let me try him on the pitcairn diet & he never had another attack :) Here`s a link for info on the book & about Dr Pitcairn.

I think I`d wean him on the Naturediet slowly tho.

edited to make the link work!!!!

It was me !!:D

Yes we had Min on JWB and this was hit and miss for her and she always had bouts that lasted the same for three or four days. This was the best we got her as when we were searching for the best food to get her as she got seriously under weight as she was not getting any goodness at all as everything was going straight thro her :(

Anyway after looking at Nature diet I decided I would try it as nothing gained nothing ventured and this has been the only food I felt that seemed to be giving me any good vibes about it working bar Barf ! So we went ahead and I swapped her over straight away as she would get an upset tum anyway !!

Well it was an almost over night success !! She had solid poos and no wind and this has kept on !! We also give her carrrots as snacks. Sometime though if we do give her raw hide chews as she loves them then it can upset her but this is not often and as she is nearly thirteen I still want her to have treats.:)

She is a much happier dog and her face when she does poos is an absolute picture !! :D It is almost like 'look at me mummy and daddy, look what I am doing !! ''

She is like a new dog and out on walks with the youngsters she is bunney jumping around in the wheat like a puppy !!

It has certainly had a very positive effect on her !

Let us know how you get on !!

How is your new girl settling in ! I bet it is like you have had her all her life now !!

Hi, my friend's dog was diagnosed with colitis, I think about a year ago, maybe a bit longer, and she has had problems with diets. Recently was given the Hills (at £18 per week!), but even that started going straight through. She is now going to start the dog on Naturediet Lite - there are no additives or anything in it, just meat (apparently they only use meat fit for human consumption), vegetables and brown rice, and the Lite has added fibre in it. I started my own dog on Naturediet (not Lite, as he hasn't got colitis), a week ago, and he loves it - his doings are really solid and he isn't doing half as much of them as before, so I presume the food is being well digested. When I changed him over, I started by giving him half his normal food with half the new, for about 3 days, then tried him with the new on it's own.

Hi,
my dog has lamb rice and peas with nutrifyba sprinkled on each dinner, which was prescribed, advised by my vet,the lamb and rice is easy digestable as for the nutrifyba it is about 12.00 pound and last about 10 weeks.
This does do the trick but ocassionally he will have a little outburst if he has eaten something he shouldnt(rich food)
good luck!!

ps.. nutrifyba is only available at your vet's!!!

I know this is not what you asked about but there is such a lot of information on this page that you may find something useful.

I add tree barks powder from Dorwest herbs and glucosamine sulphate each day to my boys feed. He is fed the same as everyone else except he cannot have too much bone ie Chicken Wings as that seems to set him off. Jan
