My bassett is a year now but he still does a poo and wee early in the morning. Any suggestions to how i can stop this. If we leave him in when we go out he messes to.

don't all dogs do this early in the morning? in fact, don't all humans??!

i don't think you can stop it i'm afraid - you just have to take him outside first thing and let him go out there.

have you tried using a crate to help with the housetraining when you are out? do a search on this site and you will get loads of info / ideas.

someone more experienced than me will be along with advice soon i'm sure...:)

My lab bitch is good as gold , always as been she waits till i let her out at 6.30 am but the bassett can be out all day and i let him in and he goes and messes. I have had him in a cage but he still messes in there. I think its just a male thing.

It's not a male thing - it's a he isn't housetrained thing. If he is pooing and weeing in the house as frequently as you indicate, then you need to start at the beginning again with housetraining.

Do you stay out there with him and wait until he 'performs', or just put him outside and hope for the best? Have you taught him whereabouts in the garden you would like him to use?

Marty ,
what size crate are you using?
Its not a male thing-I have 3 males and have all been clean over night from 10-12 weeks.
If he does it when you're out aswell it could be a form of seperation anxiety.Do a search for this and it will give you lots of suggetions.
Good luck,Archer.

Hi
I have a Basset who is now one year old.
They mature more slowly than other breads but they are very food orientated and when we were traning Dexter we stayed outside with him till he did something, and when he did anything we said the appropriate words and gave over the top praise and this was an important factor we always gave him a small treat making him sit for it.
I know just how stubborn a Basset can be l o l (: but with a lot of perseverence you can train them.
He was house trained in about 4 weeks and we also used a crate for night time getting up about 2 olock to take him out, he soon caught on that if he performed quickly he would get a nice treat he is a bit crafty.
We now do not need the crate anymore and he now asks to go out and we have stopped giving him any treats but he now goes on comand.
So don't despair give this a try for a while they really can be trained I promise you.
I hope this helps , let me know if possible.
Carol.

Hi thanks for that carol, i take him out on the lead before bed and tell him toilet which he does well 99% of the time, the 1% he doesn't then he will come in, wait till i have turned the light off then poo. I have tried giving him treats when he poos or wees out side and if he does it inside i shout bad boy and he doesnot get a treat. I now in the day keep him outside(which he seems to prefer). I have got up at 4 in the morning and he hasn't done anything and he will be fast asleep, i then get up at 6.30 and he as done a poo and wee.
Thanks again carol

If u took him out and he hasn't done his job put him in the crate wait about 15 to 20min and try again. Eventually he will get the idea of it. Also make sure the crate isn't to big, it should big enough for him to stand, sit, laydown and turn around. Maybe try getting up earlier or keep the crate in ur room so if u hear him moving around u can take him out to go. I have waited about 20min for mine to go when I was housetraining. Good luck

Hi
You have to be consistant with a basset and get them used to a routine, whenwe were first training Dexter it was hard work, staying in the garden till he had done something sometimes taking a long time.
It was easier when he had his jabs we gave him a walk and that helped we did not come in till he had done something.
You can't afford to let a Basset get the better of you they are really crafty and learn really fast that they can be naughty and get away with it.
So really working hard on training for a few weeks does pay off.
Letting him stay in the garden all day is no good because you miss when he does his bits and bobs, so he dosen't get praised , also what about the wet days, those enormous paws do make rather a mess indoors L O L.
Don't despair keep trying with treets and keeping a close eye on him, I promise you that all your hard work will pay off and just think not having to clean up a large------ and a huge amount of wee will be better for you.
They can be so very stubborn and can be hard work but a well trained Basset is a happy Basset and so is his owner.
Good luck
carol
