Well, its been a week now since i bought monty home and he has been taking himself outside everytime he needs to go right from day one. The problem is in the last couple of days he has been weeing on the carpet. The backdoor is open all the time so I can't understand why he is doing this. Its only been 3 times and I make a noise to stop him and run outside with him following me and after about 30 seconds he is finishing the job on the grass. Can anyone help explain why??
He has been really good up til now and doesnt even mess his crate at night. He holds it in from 11 til 5 which I think is great for a 9 week old pup!!

At 9 weeks old his is such a baby that the times he went outside could have been a fluke. He needs to be taught that outside is GOOD! :) You need to TAKE him outside and stand with him , giving him a command that he will begin to associate with peeing or pooing. I use *Hurry Up!* for a pee and *Be Quick* for a poo.

When he has performed , make a big fuss of him and then bring him back inside.

Keep your eyes peeled for obvious signs that he is going to *go* ..circling , sniffing etc etc. Take him outside every 20 mins or so and after every feed and drink. He will soon get the message

At the moment , he doesn't know the difference bettween going outside (HUGE FUSS) and going inside (Nothing at all) and YOU have to teach him which is which :)

Sam - just to support what Melody has said. Don't just leave the door open for your puppy. When the colder wetter days come he won't have a clue what to do. He is going inside because he is beginning to find his feet and does not know the difference between house and garden - to him it's all one.

Take him out at times just as Melody has said and encourage him, ie train him to go outside. Show him that the door has to be opened and that he has to ask you to open the door.

Thanks for your help guys,

In reponse to what you have suggested I am already doing this. Since I got him I have been taking him outside after play, sleep and feeding (lots of Perfect Puppy reading!). As soon as he starts i tell him to "hurry up" (my neighbours must think i am weird) then afterwards he gets a big fuss and play time!!! I'm sure he holds it in so he can spend more time chasing me round the garden!

He waits for me to open the door first thing in the morning before going and has only once wee'd inside when the door was closed. Maybe he has been so good that my expectations are too high :)

btw, I don't think i will have a problem on wet days, his first day was pouring down and he spent most of the day out in it loving every minute!!!
