What age would you recommend first putting a dog to stud ?
This is not about Gus by the way but I have been having a little nosey on the site and there is a dog advertised at the moment who was only born in December 2002 and says he is to be put to stud when proven .
Isnt this too young ???

yes i would say far to young i thought they had to be at least 12 months or older

I always feel that stud dogs shouldn't need to be advertised, apart from in their year book to say that they are available. If they are good specimens of their breed, bitches will be offered to them.
In my breed dogs are used any time from about 10 months onwards, but then very few are hip scored, and eye testing should be done before they go to their new homes.

My thoughts exactly . At this age he wouldnt even have had any kind of showing record plus he simply hasnt finished growing ? :(
The dog in question is 2 months younger than Gus and I wouldnt even take any one seriously if they approached me about him .

My personal opinion (for what it's worth) is that yes, it is too young. But in several books on dog breeding they say that a potential stud dog should be first used about 10 months old. Whether that's outdated, I don't know. I would personally prefer to wait until he's about 18 months - that way you know more how he'll mature.

What breed was it lel? Can't imagine putting my terv boy, and he is a month younger- november 20th. Far too young. He will never be bred of course-as he is teeny tiny for the breed.
