Topic Dog Boards / Feeding / Smelly Beta Puppy pooch!
- By efry [gb] Date 06.07.03 09:39 UTC
I have two five month old Husky pups fed on Beta Puppy. For which I have two different problems. The boy has started to have a tendancy to let wind alot recently. Meanwhile the female who has been teething recently has gone off her food entirely but appears happy to eat other forms of food - raw bones, mince, etc. Which leads me to think maybe I should change the brand of food I give them. While I would like to try the BARF diet I simply do not have the time or fridge/freezer space to do so. Can anyone recommend any suitable puppy food they have fed their sibes on or have experienced similar problems with Beta Puppy. Up until now they have been happy pups and the breeder has not come across any "wind" problems as a result of feeding it.

Any help would be useful

Hello Liz,
I think most pups tend to fart, I presume that is the moist meaty pooches that you are feeding your pups, have you tried the dry foods? They don't smell are much cleaner and in my experience makes their poos much more solid. Which I think leads to less trumping. Sorry about the terms used. Also it is alot cheaper, I don't want to sound like a cheapskate. I use burgess puppy with chicken & rice it comes in an orange bag. I also buy frozen meat which you can buy from your local pet stores, this can be cooked in the microwave which is quick and easy. This gives more texture and flavour to their food so I feel they enjoy it better.
Hope this will help you

Beta puppy is actually a dry dog food as | know that wet stuff can cause all sorts of issues especially teeth related ones. I have tried adding mince to the biscuits and this sort of works. Maybe I should try it for longer periods I tend to give it as a treat as I usually forget to defrost it regularly enough! I was just a little worried about the meal not being as balanced as it should be ie if its have Beta Puppy and half chicken/turkey/lamb mince.

One day I will work myself up to cooking Tripe again. I did this about ten years ago for my Golden Retriever and to be honest I thought I was going to be sick! I had to boil it with a flannel over my mouth so I couldn`t smell it. Meanwhile the dog went absolutely mental around me in anticipation of dinner!

I tend to cheat with the pups atm and give them the tripe sticks - but only in well ventilated areas!!!!!

Take care

Don't cook tripe it should alwas be fed raw, just thaw it out in a container with a lid on it and feed.
Don't wait another ten years.

Raw hey....always gives me the shudders but I need to keep reminding myself that is how they originally ate it. Well raw sounds bearable. I`ll try that then I`ll sure it will be most appreciated!

NB why is it best raw? I`m not sure whats in it (although I`m pretty sure its something really grim!).

Raw meat has enzymes which help to prevent tartar teeth.

Hi
You mention that you'd like to try the barf diet but because of time/fridge space etc can't. I have a 13 week puppy and he's on the barf diet and is a really healthy, lively and happy chappy. As I prepare the meals for my family, I don't find it a problem preparing Charlie's food - it's not as difficult as you might think. I have a husband and two teenage boys and manage with a medium sized 'top of the fridge' freezer but as I live in the city, it's easy for me to pick up fresh meat daily if I run out.
If you think it's too hard at the moment, perhaps you could compromise? I suppose it all depends on your general food philosophy.
Good luck.

HI if you want to stay feeding a complete diet then I recomend Arden Grange or Burns mini bites. Both are sourced from traceable ingredients and are very high quality, easily digested and always enjoyed by the fussy dogs I have fed them to. If it were my puppy I would throw the Beta away (once you have taken 3 or 4 days to change diets)- its rubbish imo and I have often read on this board that those dogs fed on it have tummy problems and also sometimes a severe mineral deficiency that needed veterinary attention!!
