Hi, have just discovered a tick on my pups fur, any idea how to get them off?

I smear Vaseline or similar all around the exposed bit, this smothers them, after a few mins or so, the tick should die, then you can pull out, very slowly, don't squeeze too hard (I use tweezers). The legs should come out with it, hopefully not wriggling - that makes me feel really yuk!

Hi Bridget, I just give the tick a quick squirt with some Frontline spray, and it dies and drops off in a couple of days. There are implements available called tick removers, but I'd be afraid that the head parts might be left embeded and set up an infection.

The tick remover implements are excellent, and the heads most definitely come out - you can see them waving around.

You put the implement close to the skin round its "neck", twist ANTI-CLOCKWISE 3 times, and it drops off. You can then drown, squash or merely chuck it away.

They come in packs of 2 with a big and a little one.

Before I got one, I used to use Vodka or rum on cotton wool

Once the tick feels you touch it then it will tighten its grip & removing it may leave a head part. The thing to do is do it quickly the 1st time. Just grab it right from the bottom in one quick twist & pull....very sharply...I do dozens like that every week.

Thanks everyone . . . in the end we covered it in butter ( couldn't find the vaseline :-)) and when it loosened, quickly pulled it out. We got the head and legs. . . Thanks again!

We find the best way to "freeze" them is put some nail varnish remover on some cotton wool and they are easy to remove after a second or two

I recently had this problem with a new pup I bought, but the frontline worked wonders, a couple of days and they just dropped off and he's now protected against them for a while - thank goodness, horrible things..........lol.

we heat up a steel knitting needle head and place it on the tick which lets go straight away. Never try to pull a tick off as the head will remain under the skin causing infection.

couldn't do that with libby as she wouldn't stand still long enough, I'd probably end up burning her!!!!!

Not if you do it properly bazza ;)....I do dozens & dozens by pulling off & never yet had an infection or left mouth parts in.

Same here sam I just twist them off.
