OK, I have now found a local source of meat for the boys.

Spent over a hour cutting up 4 fresh hearts (£8 for 4), for the freezer and slipped over in the puddle of drool that collected whilst I was doing it. Even my mini-girlie cat who eats nothing but Gormet foil packets, stuffed herself silly on heart scraps.

I have given hubby orders to collect 2 whole fresh tripes (£10 for 2) from the abbatoir on Tuesday morning (so fresh they'll probably still be steaming) before he goes to work.

So I guess Tuesday night I will be processing them :O

Where can I get a meat grinder at a reasonable price that will be up to the job?

Julia & a steaming pile!!

Northern Tools do meat grinders. I don't have their address at the moment but if you do a search then pick the UK one so you get sterling prices

If your husband is going to collect the tripes in the morning I hope he is not going to leave them in the car all day :D

Get a container with a lid - the smell of fresh tripe is not too obnoxious but the flies will be drawn to it.

If you have fish (outside) this can come in useful. Get a container with some VERY small holes in the top, scrape some of the eggs from the meat along with a little bit of meat and put in container. After a couple of days when the maggots have hatched you can feed them to the fish - feed two lots of livestock for the price of one !! :D

You may be able to get hearts, liver, lights (lungs) from the abbatoir as well.

Glad to see you have a meat supplier for your dogs but the price of the tripes seem very steep (probably works out to about 50p per lb). Have you tried ringing around some suppliers who deliver in your area you could get tripe at around 22p per lb. I get mine for 20p but I know my supplier does deliver around the country at 22p. I also get whole tripes for £2.50.

I'll let you know how much it works out at when I have finished tomorrow night as I don't really know yet how much will be arriving.

I have only found 2 other places, one hasn't answered yet as to whether my area is included and the other only comes to south wales. There doesn't appear to be any where in somerset that delivers.

At least it will be fresh!!!

TPMS deleiver to my friend in Monksilver, as she has got together with some train8ing club freinds to buy meat, and as they were already coming down the M5 were willing to detour.

Hi

Monksilver is just above my mother in law !!

Who are TPMS?? I live just off the M5 so no major detour would be necessary.

Hi!

Have several of my friends getting meat from them, and am told it is very good quality, better than some of their rivals!

They are based in Redditch and are very helpful.

Tel 01527 510870. Mention that they already deliver in Monksilver, so they can check their routes.

Their tripe is 26p per pound if ordering under 100 pounds of it. It gets cheaper t6he more you order, down to 17p a pound for a 1000 pounds!!!!!! I wonder where on eartth you would put a 1000 pounds of tripe, and how long it would last.

If I fed mine tripe and biscuit that amount would last my four dogs nearly a year!

1000 lbs = 453 Kg @ 720g per day = 629ish days (and a freezer all too itself!!)

I'll give them a call.

Thank you.

I have now completed my stint in the kitchen knee deep in raw tripe, and ended up with 46lbs which works out at around 23p per Lb.

Not to bad, but took me nearly 5 hours to complete.

Each time a juicy bit went through the mincer it squirted all over the floor, to a rush of licking labradors. my clothes are covered, my legs and feet have been licked clean and my hair stinks.

That said they boys love me dearly

why bother mincing the tripe when i fed the stuff i just cut it into manageable pieces ie each piece was enough for 1 meal and the dogs minced it themselves:-)
- By Julia [gb] Date 14.07.03 12:01 UTC
purely cause minced fits better into the freezer:)

<<<hurling at the description of juicy bits hitting the floor>>> :D

You lot are wonderful!! And I thought I was good, boiling chicken n rice for 3 hours last Saturday, in a heatwave!

I can't bring myself to buy tripe....cos when I was a kid, my dad used to have tripe n onions, and the smell made me vomit. He also ate things called "chitterlings" (sp?).

Parents told me they were sausages......and one day..years later....I found out what they were..........
