Topic Dog Boards / Health / Westie with Collitis
- By westielover2 [gb] Date 02.07.03 14:47 UTC
i have a six year old westie that was a rescue dog and was basically fed on human scraps. In January he was diagnosed with Colitis and since then he has been on Salozopyrin tablets and a prescription diet Hills I/D.
Ocassionally he has bouts of colitis and these take 3 to 4 days to clear up.
Obviously the food he has is very expensive and I was just wondering if there was an alternative? Was do other dog owners use?
Any help would be wonderful.

One of our dogs gets colitis fairly regularly. In addition to his normal food he has live bio yoghurt mixed with tree barks powder (from Dorwest Herbs). This seems to have cut down the amount of times it happens without having to go on a prescription diet or medication.

hi
My vet told me my min schnauzer has colitis she changed her food to james wellbeloved duck & rice which she loves, but i also give her natural live bio yoghurt & a dessert spoon of organic oats for extra fibre.Try feeding her 3 or 4 times aday small amounts untill it comes under control.

My nine year old dog had collotis diagnosed when he was young, i too was prescribed a diet of hills, and yes it is very expensive.
I fed him on pedigree chum complete for sensitive stomachs and the problem never reocurred, i also foun that most low protein dried foods suited him too.

Just thought I'd say that this is not my post - from the regular westielover.

If you cant afford the Hills try Burns food which is a great food and lowish in protein, it not cheap cheap but cheaper than Hills.

My Lab Min who is nearly 13 had collitis for four years and changed her over to nature diet lite a couple of months a go and she has now been colitis free and wind free since we changed ! It has done the trick. I also tried the Hills prescription diet which didn't work and she was on JWB for a long while with sporadic bouts but ths has completely cleared it up now !
