Topic Dog Boards / Health / Possible Internal Injury
- By socks1 [us] Date 30.06.03 14:16 UTC
My dog had her front paw run over by a car on Saturday. Took her to the vet and indicated no broken bones and no internal injuries that they could detect. Foot cleaned and bandaged and seemed to be o.k. just tired from the stress. Starting Saturday evening up until today, Monday, dog has uncontrollable urges to poop, all over the place, very runny, and now noticing some blood. I am thinking she may have internal injury after all. She has an appt. tonight but just wondering if anyone else know what the cause may be. She was not given any medication or antibiotics from initial visit for foot injury.

Hiya
It could be shock. A lot of dogs (and humans) react in this sort of way to a traumatic experience. But, having said that, you say there is blood in it? It would be hard to imagine something internal getting damaged when it was just her paw that was run over. Are you sure nothing else got in the way of the wheel?
Has the vet done an xray?...no broken bones?? that is prettylucky. What breed is she?
I presume she is on some sort of pain reliefe tablets. Could it be that they are disagreeing with her?? Some dogs just cant take certain medication, like humans.
Personally, I would just get her straight to the vet anyway. Have them give her a proper check, I would also advise an x ray really after an accident like that. Of course, the blood and diarrhoea could be something seperate to the injury to her foot.
Good luck and let us know how it goes.

Hi Socks1

It's not uncommon to notice fresh bright blood in a dog with diahorrea. It's caused by the dog straining and bursting blood vessels in the anus. The vet will probably give you some antibiotics just to ward off any infections as a precaution.
She's had quite a traumatic Saturday with the paw incident. Have you been spoiling her? It doesn't take many extra treats to cause the runs sometimes.
Hope it's not anything more serious. If it was internal bleeding then the blood would be darker and thicker, she may have a lower temperature and pale gums and possibly be lethargic.
Hope she's ok.
