Topic Dog Boards / Feeding / TRIPE????? IS THIS ANY GOOD FOR BULKIN
- By madaboutboxers [gb] Date 29.06.03 14:06 UTC
Hi, i have a slimmish 16 mth boxer bitch and i'm wondering where she's putting all of her food, she eats loads but doesn't seem to be gaining any wait. Is this a case of too much exercise or is this a metabolism thing,i have a 19 mth boy and i brought him up on tripe,he's now got bigger pecs than i have.
Has anyone or is anyone giving their dogs tripe? opinions please!! i won't be offended, Honest!!!

I feed tripe as part of a raw diet and my Beardies love it. I used to have Boxers and was given some to try and one of them sat and shook when he saw it:-D He did take to it in the end though.I think it's an ok food

I have fed tripe before and found it good for putting on weight. However at 16 months old she may be a late maturer and still be going through that gangly teenage stage so I wouldn't worry too much-give her time

It is the remaining partdigested plant matter in the stomach that gives the tripe its colour (if anyone has seen tripe prepared for human consumption all this has been cleaned right out and it is white). This matter has vitamins and trace elements that a procesed diet cannot have. That is why if you cook it some of its major benefits are ruined.

Also there is nothing more heave inducing than the smell of cooking tripe. :D

Althoough I don't eat it :) I won't have a bad word said about tripe :D My father had cancer when I was about 6 and because of the radiotherapy he had no saliva and couldn't swallow properly. He lived on nothing else apart from tripe and onions for months. He lived for another 30 years after that so it must have done him good :)

all i do is cut it and put it in freezer bags, then defrost it in the microwave, they can't get enough of it.I've actually boiled it once but it stank the house out for days.

Can you still get "proper" green tripe? Seem to remember it smells quite good until it gets warm.

I only ever see the white stuff.

Hi,
I feed raw tripe to my dog who adores it, I get it frozen (free flow or blocks) from a pet store - its produced by A.M.P. LTD

Edited as no-one got in touch
- By corso girl [gb] Date 30.06.03 20:31 UTC
Hi yes you have to have the natural tripe not the cleaned white this is no good what so ever for dogs, most good pet stores will sell it in packets in the freezer. Jackie

Yes I feed my all my dogs on tripe and they just can't get enough of it. I buy it from Kyle Animal Feeds and it comes in at 30p per pound, minced, frozen and in lb packs. He also does chicken and meat. I understand the more you buy the cheaper it becomes. Also the delivery is free. If anybody is interested I can give you their phone number. I have to say I have tried AMP and Bambers and for some reason my dogs prefers Kyle's. They could be tripe conansours (!?)

I feed tripe to all my dogs, we have changed over from complete, and my dogs have never looked so good. We have a tibetan mastiff that we had just about given up on, but she now looks a different dog, but Usually we do not feed only tripe it is better as part of a larger feed plan, with whole wheat biscuit, mixed veggy's, and even pasta or brown rice.I buy in bulk and pay £18 per 100lb,they also have chicken wings, today I spent cutting up 10lb of hearts to mix with Laughing dog meal and mixed veg and add 1 teaspoon of extra virgin olive oil.another good thing for weight gain is breast of lamb, this has also worked for me in the past.If you would like to email me if you can buy in bulk. I can give you the phone number were I get in for £18 pence a pound, chicken wings 40p a pound , as with the chicken carcass's they also do home delivery and have a large range of other frozen meats. Another good tip NEVER try to thew it out in the microwave!!!!!!

Hi margeret!!
just wondered if you can give me the number for kyle's as it seems pretty cheap but as you say it's good stuff, i usually pay £1.65 per pound for the tripe,i've never seen anywhere cheaper but i get mine straight from the butcher.
Where abouts is Kyle's?
How far do they travel for the delivery? I live in Salisbury(stonehenge) is this worth trying for delivery?
thanx Gary

Hi Gary,

Sorry but I think you may stay a bit too far away for Kyle to deliver. I think the stuff your paying £1.65 from the butchers is the tripe meant for human consuption. Is it white ? If it is then it's been cooked for what seems a life time and bleached to get it that white colour. Is there any slaughter houses near you ? If so give them a phone and they should be able to supply you with beef tripe (I don't get the sheep tripe - and gawd does it stink far worse than the beef tripe). If not, and you dont mind waiting till friday I get my dog papers and I should be able to find someone nearer you and maybe even cheaper.

MArgaret

Here is the phone number for Kyles just in case 01290427089

Thanks anyway margerat.
I've managed to ring around and after 20 or so desperate phone calls,i've found a pet shop that sells tripe in frozen packs for 36p lb,i'll knock it down after a few trips there.
Thanks again for your help.

Shame you are not a bit closer to me as I have 2 whole fresh tripes coming steaming from the abbatoir tomorrow morning.

When I get in from work I will be up to my ankles processing it. I would happily share some of it

Had to do it this way as no-one round here seems to sell it in reasonable sizes/qtys.

Beef tripe is excellent for bodying up a skinny dog my young dog is on 3lb a day as well as his wholebake biscuit. I get mine for 16p a lb if I pick up and 20p a lb if delivered.

Tripe is excellent for your dogs and most dogs just love it. IT MUST BE FED RAW! When you cook it you destroy all the vitamins and minerals that are in it. I use tripe in rotation with minced chicken with veges and fruit, minced chicken as well as raw chicken backs and turkey necks. My animals are feed twice a day with the mince meal or tripe for supper the other for breakfast. I use the feeding schedule set forth by Dr. Ian Billinghurst from Australia in his book "Give a Dog a Bone". My cats are also fed on this same regime with a few adjustments since cats are more carnivores while dogs are omnivores like ourselves. Dr. Billinghurst has written at least one newer book since "Give a Dog a Bone". He calls this regime the BARF DIET which stands for Bones and Raw Food Diet.

A girlfriend had a dog go through dozens of tests and hundreds of dollars of vet bills to determine her allergy to find out she was allergic to grains. Once she was taken off of commerical dog food and put totallly on the Raw Food Diet her allergy cleared up. All of her 5 adult Standard Poodles and 9 six-week old puppies are on the Barf Diet. She adds Atlantic Sea Kelp and a Six in One Oil twice weekly to pick up on some of the vitamins and minerals that maybe lacking. Some of her adult dogs that were very picky eaters in the past are better eaters now. They all just adore Tripe.
