Topic Dog Boards / Feeding / Autarky

I know that everyone has a different opinion about different brands of dog food, but I am thinking of switching from Burns to Autarky. ( Burns- good as it is - is just to expensive)
How many of you uses Autarky and what is the general opinion of the quality of this brand??
Thanks
Cara

Hi
Been feeding Autarky for About 18 months now and find it excellent. All 3 dogs are in wonderful condition on it and they love the taste.Don't need to feed high quantities so it works out very economical.

Hi, I have also changed my 5 dogs over to Autarky, the only thing is they dont seem to get much and I am worried they are not being fed enough, they always seem hungry. I am following the instructions on the pack, the biggest dogs get 185g a day but this does not seem very much.

You need to go more on the condiion of your dog rather than the amount on the packet. If your dog is a good bodyweight then you've got it right. If not adjust accordingly. Some dogs are just greedy and are always hungry-give something to chew to keep him happy like a nice big marrow bone.

Thanks Archer, the only thing is the girls are quite stocky so its no problem but the boys are really skinny.
They do look good and I dont want them to be fat but I just wonder if they are maybe to skinny. I had thought about adding pasta to their diet maybe once or twice a week to see if I can get a bit of weight on them.

How long have they been on Autarky??How pld are the dogs/bitches?
I would Just up the amount you feed the boys until your happy with their weight and then reduce it a little to maintain a good weight.

p.s just an after thought....could your boys be stressed .Dogs kept with bitches in season can have problems keeping on weight-even if they don't seem stressed outwardly ..

The bitches have been spayed which is what has caused the weight increase in them they are 2, the dogs are very slender anyway they are full of bounce never stay still for long there ages are 1 and the youngest is 7 months. They have been on Autarky for about 3 months so maybe its to early to tell although they were on JWB before and still look skinny, their weight is ok though ranging between 15 and 19 kg so maybe they are going to always look skinny .

Your males are very young-give them time and don't worry about their weight. They will fill out in time. Its much better for a youngster to be on the lean side rather than over weight-less stress on growing bones!!

I feed mine Autarky (well usually, at the moment they're on Davies Ranger Lamb and Rice, but only as there was no Autarky in stock at our Jollye's) and I can say it is the best food we've tried. We've had to try a lot with Sky, our rescue lurcher, as she has a food allergy, but on the Autarky she is great - shiny coat, no itching, no hair loss, and firm poos too!
You can order it online from CSJ (do a search on MSN for "CSJ dog food"), it works out at about £13 a sack there, or most Jollye's stores do it. I've heard that Sainsbury's and Tescos do it too, but our local ones dont.
Hope that helps :)

I guess I'm the fly in the ointment here.

I bought Autarky as I thought it sounded tasty and my eat-anything labrador Chester completely refused to eat it.

Sorry I had the same problem, non of mine would touch it, I bought it because it sounded ideal, and bought a large sack. but even when I took the full bowls away gave them it the next day thinking they would be that hungary they would eat anything, meg is an absolute pig, but no they would not have it.
I do not know if they do small bags but I would try them first, or try to contact then on line and see if you can get a free sample off them.

Thanks all!
It sounds positive.
Bought a small bag and both my dogs are liking it. ( still mix it with Burns)
The only thing I noticed is, it a bit higher in protien then Burns. 22%
One of my dogs gets very hyper when fed high protien so will have to wait and see.

For those who`s dogs didn`t eat it; a while ago - not sure how long - they had a problem with a batch, after people complained they replaced the affected bags.
If you still have the bag it might be worth giving them a ring.

I have fed Autarky to my 7 month Giant Schnauzer since day one. Have to say he seems really well on it and looks great. Had a problem with runny tummy though and recently has developed itchy skin. Am going to try Hills and see if this changes as suggested by my vet.

All in all though - think Autarky is pretty good - its what the breeder feeds her giants/standards on.

ive used it and found it good, also my sis put her rotts on it, and one who was a persistant foot chewer stopped! and all the dogs hers & mine like it,

I have certainly found it passes the taste test with my fussy bitch. Previously the only dry food she would eat reliably was Arden Grange prestige or Adult, but not the classic range.

As it is no as high protein as the AG I am able to indulge them with a pound of Tripe/minced chicken/Meat shared between the four of them, on top of a smaller portion of this.

I've never heard of this before. I may pop round to Jollye's and get some now as the other food that I get from there seems to be making my dogs really thirsty. This has never happened before and I've used it for over a year but I am quite worrie as they are drinking way more than they used to and it's only since opening a new bag of the food.
