Hi all, I am looking after a GSD cross Collie as some of you may know. We took it to the Richmond park today where there was a lake with a sandy beach. He loved the swimming part and every time he came out of the water, he rolled in the sand and ended up looking like a kommodor. I got him home and have bathed him and scrubbed him (cos he stunk), We spent ages in the bathroom and I think i got wetter than him. However....when he was dry i noticed that he was still FULL of sand! I am at a loss. I have been grooming him for about an hour with all different implemets and NOTHING. Not one bit of sand has shifted. Has anyone got any good tips on how to get it out of their coat?
thanks very much

Hi there Steph,
I live opposite a beach so i know how you feel. Bandit and i walk there everyday and he goes in to the sea and gets covered in sand. I' ve given up with baths i now shower. I don't bother with clothes they only get soaked. I get into the bath with him and use the shower i rinse all the sand out and then give him a shampoo once a week if needed. I then shower myself off because by then i 'm covered in sand.
Hope this helps, i find it a lot easier.

Hiya Xanthe
Thanks for your reply. Its a nightmare isnt it. They just get so sandy and especially since his coat (im not sure what breed bandit is or how thick his coat is), is so dense, it is incredibly thick, sand just seems to stick.
I tried using the shower hose on him actually, and i thought it had done the trick, cos it seemed like stuff was coming out, but still to no avail. I have used every bit of grooming epuiptment that i have, even flea combs, but it just doesnt shift.( mind you, i envy you living opposite a beach. That must be great this time of year, i bet bandit loves it too)
take care

x ( and a very sandy big black dog:) )

My son was like this after our holiday in Cornwall last year!! Despite showering every day, he still brought most of the beach home with him in his hair. It only came out after a looooonngg soak in the bath. (I swear we could have built sandcastles in the bathroom!)

Hiya,
Bandit is a Siberian Husky so he has two coats and his coat is very thick, he always seams to like it when the tide is out, then he jumps and rolls around in all the muck. I think its just perserverence. I start at the top off him and then use my other hand to scrap the sand off him till it falls into the bath. I still find the odd grain off sand but thats life, i walk him up on the beach everyday so he's bound too.
Hope you get the sand out

ps how do you do the smiley faces?
Someone said this on another list the other day - I have NO idea if it works, but they said that they've used baby powder to get sand out. That the baby powder draws the moisture out of the sand and makes it dry out and then fall out.
Wendy

That sounds quite feasible, Wendy. :) Did they go on to say how you manage to get powder into the hair of a reluctant 6' 1" teenager....
In my case JG, first remove step ladder from garage ......................

Let it dry and then hoover it out. Use the little brush attachment and go through the coat methodically.

Is that for the dog or the teenager?!

I was wondering that, too! ;)
