I sold a pup and 2 week later was asked to take it back because It has diahorrea. They've taken it to the vets but they are worried of running up a bill and its still not right. Whats the best thing to do as I have taken it back for them it has a slight runny nose otherwise it is running round without a problem. But they say they are not having it back until its solid. Can anyone help.

I'm not sure that I would be letting them have it back :) What does your contract say, mine says they should have it checked by their vet within one week if they are to have a full refund due to unfitness, beyond that I take the view any deterioration is likely to be due to their rearing for example have they stuck to the feeding regime you have given them. Of course it is almost the norm for a puppy to have a stomach upset the first day or so due to the change of water but I usually advise light diet, scramble egg, rice etc for the first 24 hours then back to the diet they have been reared on. Looks like this has gone longer than that period and I think you should have your vet have a look at the puppy.

Thanks Isabel I'm afraid I'm new at this breeding and dont have a contract. i do have a policy though that at any time I sell a puppy and the owners wish to bring it back through whatever reason I will let them . Because there must be something wrong with them if they can do this. I will be going to the vet on Monday and maybe telling them they are unfit to have it back after that.I will then find a better home for it.

Contracts don't seem to have any standing in law but I do think they put everyone in the right frame of mind. Strictly speaking once you have paid for something it is yours but as they have handed the puppy back to you if you give them all the money back I think even if they kick up a fuss (which they may do once you get the puppy well again and paid the vets fees yourself ;)) you should be alright.

next time make sure your pups go with an insurance cover, theyre free to use and would of saved all this as the bills would of been paid---wasnt the pup kc registered, if so it would be insured through them,

Yes the pup is KC reg but they havent sent off the form. They have brought it back with the dog. So I doubt if they sent it in now they would be able to claim

HI THERE,
my dog is insured with pet plan.i know with any insurance policy you can not claim for first 2 weeks of taking it out,so whether the pup was insured or not if it was less than 2 weeks they wouldnt be able to claim back.
Go with pet plan they will insure an on going illness all others wont after first 12 months.

Good question. I think there child has been feeding it something or theyve been giving it tit bits. Either way I have not had to do anything. They said whatever it takes to get it right they'll keep up. Suspicious eh.

if they gave a puppy back over something as trivial as runny poo then they definitely shouldnt have it back. If they cant afford the vets bills for that then they cant afford a puppy.
I would tell them to get lost (perhaps a bit more politely than that) and find the puppy a new owner
