Topic Dog Boards / Behaviour / licking lips/tardak - is it stress?
- By cissy Date 27.06.03 15:15 UTC
HI
I'm at home with my boy who had a Tardak shot on Tues evening [update: we are making experimental efforts to stop male-male aggression with training and Tardak rather than neuter]. Since then he has been licking his lips a lot. He is still playing well and not showing aggression to males but is not really his exuberant self, in fact he is quite submissive, ears are right back when I talk to him. He is also lying around a lot just looking at me, not particularly responsive to my suggestions to play etc. He still sniffs and marks a lot on walks. He is eating and drinking normally and not that hot.
I'm not sure how to interpret the lip licking but I read on another post that it is a sign of stress.???? Can someone help enlighten me?
thanks

I have read somewhere that licking lips is a sign of submission, so maybe the drug has reduced the dominance.

I think Thistle is right about it being a sign of appeasement. Yawning is a sign of stress (when out on walks, or during training, etc, not at bedtime!!), is he doing this, too?

thanks to both, that makes sense - he is not yawning other than when he is knackered. He smiles on his walks and tongue hangs out so I guess that is a good sign...
