Hi,
Why did the breeder not register the litter?
I wouldn't use a non-registered dog on any of my registered bitches, no matter how good he was, there is no guarantee that the dog is purebred (sorry...don't mean to be rude, but you know what I mean).
Black is an extremely dominant colour and if a black lab is mated to another dog of a similar size and short coated, almost all (if not all) of the pups will come out black and short coated and look like lab puppies.
We have some black labs round here who are obviously not purebred labs (if you know dog breeds, you can get a pretty good idea), but they were sold as purebred labs.
It doesn't matter if your dog is registered or not, I am sure you will love him the same way, also don't forget once a dog is used at stud (and not often used), he may become a pain with other dogs and get very randy. It's not a good idea to use a pet dog at stud.

Hi guest,
Only the breeder can register your dog, I'm afraid. What was the reason that he wasn't registered? Most breeders will register their pups unless there's a very good reason not to.
Besides, you shouldn't use him at stud until he has had his hips x-rayed and scored with the BVA/KC (and have an acceptable score), ideally his elbows scored too, and also he would need his eyes checked by a specialist.
