Hi, my 8 year old GSD has stopped eating her dog food (although she will eat dog food of the treat variety) and I'm getting concerned.

Four weeks ago she had quite major procedures done, a myleograph on her spine amongst other things and then picked up a throat infection from the tube. I've had her back to the vet and he gave her antiobiotics and said it was nothing serious but I am getting worried that she is only picking and not interested in her food.

I think part of the problem is that she has been taking medication for some months and has finally realised she has been getting it in her food. Now she is refusing to eat it.

She is not refusing to eat full stop, but it is only certain things like fresh chicken she will entertain, which I have given her just to make sure she gets something to eat.

Has anyone any suggestions as she is still quite run down at the moment and I don't want her getting any weaker.

Thanks

Try making a Bovril/Marmite gravy drink and pour it over the food.
Or if she will eat tablets no problems you need to get vit b complex or
brewers yeast tablets. As these are supposed to help with increasing
the appetite.

Kind Regards

You could try a product called B-Sorb. Its a green liquid tonic that boosts appetite really well and replaces lots of lost minerals and vitamins after illness. I think its Stock Nutrition that sell it. I would also give a tablespoon of live plain natural yohurt once a day to help the gut flora that will have been wiped out by the anti biotics. You could also try Chicken flavour Complan, which I used once with great success on a dog who would not eat after major surgery as its loaded with calories/goodness and gentle on the tummy, and if her throat is still sore it will slide down easily. I wouldn't give too much of the marmite/bovril as its very salty. It seems she knows what she needs to a certain extent as chicken is THE food for convalesants - try whizzing some cooked chicken in the processor and mixing with plain boiled rice and pasta+ a really good vit/min supplement like SA37. If the chicken is too small to pick out she may just eat it all. Good luck.
