Hallo there Daniel (and Charlie)
HOw are you? I am just thinking the same thing myself, I have to sort out insurance for my girl; I think many people have said that Petplan are very good, but there are so many companies aren't there?
Sorry, not too helpful; I am sure others will know more and perhpas give me some ideas too!

Hi Guys, I have my older dog insured with Pet Protect. Fortunately I've only needed to claim once and had no problems at all. I pay about £13 per month. Now I have a second dog I looked around a bit. I was fairly impressed with Tesco's plan but I then looked on the 'net' and found another plan for just under £9 per month. I was promptly sent my policy and they seemed quite helpful when I phoned, but obviously I have no further experience yet. The website is www.ceta.co.uk
Good luck

ive been told asda runs a pet insurance thats very reasonable but check the cover is ongoing for life, and the extent of any illness

What you need to look out for is that it is 'cover for life'. some companies once you have claimed for something, exclude that item when you renew the next year. Say your dog gets Gastro enteritis they will pay, but in following years if the same condition comes along they won't.
This happened to my friend who had been with the same company for years. This was Dog Breeders Insurance (not the cheapest), when they got taken over by another company they changed the small print. she has two Dobes with Thyroid trouble who's lifelong medication had always been paid for up to this year when it got excluded. Also excluded was Gastro enteritis, removal of benign fatty lumps, and treatment for bloat, all conditions that one or other had been treated for.
Pet Plan do cover for life, and only a few others. It is worth paying extra to make sure you are covered for each event even if it recurs back or continues!

Hi there,
I have pet insurance with Tesco. When I checked my policy this morning I noticed that it doesn't give life long cover. First £2500 of treatment or first 12 month of treatment for any individual condition. Not very good cover, I will be looking around.
I have heard that Direct Line insurance is good for pet's never used them though just heard it from various people.

Daniel - I would recommend Pet Plan on the grounds that you get life cover for any illness. We got a puppy ourselves in the last 6 months and I spent a lot of time looking into the cover offered by various firms.Lots of firms offer what seems cheaper cover but when you study the small print you are only covered for one year for a particular condition.Cheaper insurance would be false economy if the dog concerned got some sort of lifetime condition eg. diabetes or epilepsy.
What ever policy you settle for please read the small print very carefully.

Hi, folks
Direct line run the 'tesco's' scheme, and as I've only just realised reading the fine print you're right they don't covere reoccuring conditions which they did when we joined, shopping time for insurance, I think

I've had a look at the Asda insurance, it's very cheap! £14.00 a month for two dogs. Again your not covered for lifetime illness but it pays a higher amount for the first year than Tesco.

I think I'm gonna go with the Kennel club for insurance as they do cover for life and seem to give a good package, they will cover you up to £5000 of vets bills for a particular illness and again the next year too, any other problems and you get up to £5000 again
that's interesting - when did they start doing this, as when I got my puppy back in January they offered me insurance and it didn't have the cover for life. Although I had my other dog insured through petplan, I looked into continuing the KC that came with my pup, but decided not to because of this. Does anyone know when this changed?

They don't cover for life. I just had an indepth conversation with their coverage department since we are comparing policies for the new puppy. They cover up to £5000 per ILLNESS for the life of the dog. In other words, if you use up £1,000 for gastro enteritis in year one, you'll have £4,000 left over for subsequent years for the same illness. Each subsequent accident/illness is treated similarly. I neglected to ask if they consider orthopedics by bone/incident or one orthopedic period.
Price is good, but the lack of life coverage is what I am now considering. PetPlan for similar coverage, but for the life of the dog, was £20.65 per month. With three dogs that is a savings of about £21 per month or £252 per year.
I have just been speaking to a friend who had her dog insured with the K.C. She thought it was for life, and when he got to 10 she got a letter saying that his 'life' term was up, and they would have to reinsure him. The premium went up to £300 per year from age 10. You need to read the smallprint very carefully as so many of these policies only pay per condition so you can quickly use up your allowance.

I take it back I spoke to the KC whom first said it was "insured for life", however when I phoned their sales team, and rephrased the question to them, they told me they don't offer that, I've looked at pet plan but it's very exspensive especially for someone on benefits

Daniel - point taken about the cost of dog insurance. As it seems you are on some sort of benefit would you not be able to get free treatment from RSPCA or PDSA?Perhaps the availability of this depends on where you live but it may be worth looking in to.

Yes I can get help from the Blue Cross etc, however I would like to insure a £500 dog, if you know what I mean :)
Daniel, I know people say to pay out for the best, but there are several more economic plans as people have mentioned above. I wish there was a plan that just paid out for public liability and vets fees, as I am not so worried about all the other benefits they offer. Do other owners feel the same?

I agree Lorna :-) I know that some household policies cover third party but can't remember which. DBI used to do a third party only cover but when they were taken over it was scrapped.
Daniel, have a look at
Asda For Pets it doesn't cover for life, but it is £7.79 per month.

I am with Petplan and so far thankfully have not had cause to use them...because my dog's minor ailments (and there have been a few!) have all cost below the £55 excess to fix!!! No, I'm not grumbling, but it is a bit of a wrench to fork out £25 per visit on top of the £18 a month to Petplan....
Having worked in insurance before I scrutinised the small print of many and opted for the peace of mind. Pet Protect were another good one - don't know if they have changed the policy since, however.
In this as in everything...read the small print, and, you get what you pay for!

Hi there, just an update for people about insurance.
I decided to go with PetPlan and believe it or not, irrelevant of my crappy benefits.....cough splutter, I mean my being benefited by state help of which supports me week to week no end without any trouble of running dry......yeah right.....have decided to go on the "Supreme" plan. You may ask why, but living in Central London, I mean right in the centre, to give you an idea Big Ben is across the road and can hear it chime it's so close, is a problem in itself, as I'm next to St Jamse's Park and because it's a fairly well to do area, burglarys are common and theft of dogs is well known, thus choosing supreme, because Charlie my all white staffie is as I am starting to realise at high risk as far as being stolen, there's loads of people down in Victoria, homeless people whom are always finding dogs from various places, I suppose they need compansionship equally, however I have been told by people in the area, they have known Dogs being stolen from outside shops and public places and then never seeing them again or being told they were spotted with homeless people in other places in an around London, any I'd be devistated if Charlie was stolen as he is all I have, as I have no family and London is a very Lonely city, and he really makes waking up and dealing with the day worth it.....well when he's not running around or playing catch me, with pants in his mouth whilst guests role around laughing at me getting stressed, and keeps me going to be honest, I'd never forgive myself if he did get stolen, and I suppose I have choosen this plan as it pays out the original price of the puppy if stolen, as well as reward money and advertising costs which is great if happened, touch wood it never does.......I've had to seriously think this through being in a built up city, and know that if he did go missing, I'd have to get another staffie after searching so long to get over losing him, and to move on.....as well as that staffie have a reputation and in this day and age especially in London, if he was to nip in play.....third parties would jump at a chance to sue for damages, so get 3 million cover there which put my mind at ease, even though Charlie not viscious, he does get excited with people and bites sometime in play, although he hurts alot when he does.....the other thing I considered is I am ill hence benefits and getting Charlie, and am dealing with my depression and other problems ok, however if need be and I again became ill enough to be admitted to hospital petplan would pay for boarding costs if in hospital more than 4 days, also cancellation prices of holiday and bereveament counselling which I thought was good as well as cost of alternative medicine therapy....as well as the first month when signing online free as a bonus.....it's very exspensive however at £32.60p but you can't not look after your best friend and companion especially when he's so dear to me......your all thinking get me a bucket quick before I puke.....lol :) Seriously there's my need in him as a pal/pet/friend etc and also there's the financial side, you don't buy a £500 Rolex and don't insure it and take the chance, same with a half grand dog, if you can pay out that then what's alittle bit of security for it's welfare, and if he ever did get really ill or need emergency treatment, at least I can relax knowing I only have to pay £80 premium, towards vet bills and the rest is taken care of, as I don't have money and more improtantly wouldn't and couldn't keep him knowing I can't get him at least slightly above average treatment or the help he needs if injured or unwell......sorry to go on but that's the way it has gone and am glad I have choosen this plan as the others I checked had loads of stuff addedd which really seemed great and cheap too, but reading the small print is boring and takes time but tells it like it is......petplan seemed a bit more fair and seemed to read and gave the impression of a insurance body, willing to give good service providing you follow requirment such as a yearly dental cheakup with vets and good consitant care and upkeep of your pets health.....also although there good I did notice that online the policy actually costs more than it does if you complete a form, which they sent for me.....why I don't know and am gonna phone there support line to find out, will fill you in the reason when have spoken with them.....anyway cheers
thanks and sorry to chew your ears off

Hello Daniel.
Wonder where you two had got to! It's been very quiet around here without you :-)
Glad you and Charlie are ok, and that you managed to sort out the insurance.
I'd be interested to know why it costs more to do it online too

Crazy isn't it, either I have misunderstood or read one line got distracted by Charlie stealing my 20 Benson and Hedge's, before he gets a chance to destroy a third packet of fags, as made his way through 40 so far, as then hides after knowing he really not gonna be greated with a smile, and then reading another part only to totally forget all the understanding grammar rules I learnt at school.....and thinking I have understood it......PS I'm doing damn good for a dyslexic guy, written off at high school and my readings has always been good, spelling a pile of shite....sorry my french guyz and my grammar average....I'd love to relearn or find somewhere to teach me the stuff I need to be, as school I went to was naff, and improve it as I am a good english writer, but have problems with forms and stuff etc because of dyslexia, anyway jesus getting back to the original subject we orignially started on......of insurance it works out a slightly less amount around £3-£9 I seem to recall, and was given some steps to work out your zone and breed and type of canine type ie pedigree and then given a final cover amount, although online your just given price plans and I suppose works out automatically your postcode effect on the price......anyway as said will phone them a quiz them as to why was less than online although I need to find all the recieved documents and litreture they sent me, as to be sure I don't make a complete twattish fool of myself.......
Take care and good to here from you, and haven't been online for ages as have been unwell.....lets just say bed ridden for 5 days part choice, part no one else's to hide in instead whilst they come provide a 24 hour service or food, coffee and constant wooing, doing and generally doing everything..like changing the tv channel on remote......I'm wishing (Just joking) I'm not lazy honest just got out of bit of one of my getting into bed and only getting up to feed Charlie and give a walk to and from the end of street, only to get back into bed and turn all bells phones or commincational items out of safe distance........What I trying to uncssefully say is, been feeling very low.....couldn't get out of bed for ages, although Charlie's been a good motivator as it's not fair on him me not giving him time, through being unwell, and has given me a reason to get out of bed even if I have slept 22 hours and dehydrated and can't deal with the site of turning on the tv only to see Richard and Judy all happy and feeling great......you get my drift, Charlie's been good for me, he's learning to count at the moment, of which he's grasped and learnt really quickly also the other day I caught him opening the door when he thought I wasn't looking with his nose, and then when he thought I was coming back got back through and pushed it shut, only to be found laying in his basket like butter wouldn't melt.....he too clever, but he me laugh and that what i love about him.....little critter he is and such.....

LOL ...Grammar? since when did it have rules ? (just joking) :P Leigh

Since The DSS started awarding it as criteria and giving points on grammar instead of the actual reasons of sickness claim.......and if ya really unlucky and have some unhappy and pissed civil servant whom has just missed lunch and be told to work late to reach his targets this week without losing his tiny bonus and decides he doesn't like you by looking at your form details or dislikes the choice of colour of pen you've used, gets his red correction out and sends it back only to put back your claim another 3 and a half weeks......:)
I'm just kidding by the way but I wouldn't put it past the goverment to start doing that as to make it even that much more difficult to get help from state support......although I really shoulld check out goverment based projects to pay for getting the english lessons or basics I was denied by MaggieT, never was taught whilst at high school under the conservatives and their knaff education policies for below average or pupils with speacial learning needs not recognised by them when I was at school, so that more time be given to the quick and bright pupils to get even better exam results......and all to get them voted in another year of power...... :)
So yeah after all that above thought, Grammar? Since when did it have rules? :)

Hi
Think if Petplan does not work out you should try Direct Line I have insured my dogs with them for years and they're great. Hope it works for you but most reports I've heard about Petplan are that it's over priced and not that great.
Sorry!!
Kirsty

I have just seen in this Months dogs Today that Pinnacle insurance do cover for life!
