We have just become the proud owners of a golden retriever - can you tell me should his coat be clipped regularily if so how often?

No!!!!

A golden retrievers coat should never, ever be clipped!

All you should need is a comb and a slicker-brush, and blunt-ended scissors to shorten the hair on his pads and between his toes.
