Hello,

I have a two 1/2 yr old toy poodle that is just went in heat on 6/21/03, My yr old male follows her around the house all day sniffing her. Porsha's last heat he would sniff and walk away. not this season, I am wanting to mate her but i am not sure of when to start the mating. at this point she growls if he walks near her or if she walks near him. Porsha is 8 pounds 2oz. and turbo is 11 pounds and 5oz. is he to big to mate with her. would her puppies be to big to deliver. This would be her first litter. please give me some advise if possible.

thanks, Stacey

Hi Stacey,
I would certainly think the dog is too big to be allowed to mate the bitch. If they were mine I would separate them now, for the duration of her season, and start making enquiries to find a more suitable stud for her next time.

My advice is don't do it!!!

If you do not have enough knowledge to know when to mate your bitch then you certainly don't have enough knowledge to have a litter with her.

Get yourself some books, The Book of the Bitch is an invaluable tool. Go do a lot of research, talk to other poodle breeders and then think about what you want to do.

I have whelped my bitch, a bitch from an easy whelping line, and with years of knowledge behind me. It took all my knowledge plus a vets help to ensure that all my puppies were delivered safely and mum was well.

Many whelping go smoothly, but as with this one, my experience helped me to know when I needed the vets help.

congrats on the new arrivals Lady Dazzle! glad everything went ok in the end! hope your girl is ok! she must have been dead on her due date! where as molly was a lot earlier than expected!
Stacey- even though my whelping went very smoothly- luckily, i think it would be best to wait until youve read a bit more and found a suitable stud. because even though it was a relatively easy whelp as far as im concerned i was still terrified!
