we are soon to move from enfield north london where we have excellent areas for exercising our gsp off the lead and i am worried that in york we may not find such good walking because of much of the land being farmland - can anyone out there reassure me ? we are moving to the east side of york near to the university.

I lived in York for over 15 years (now living in Derbyshire) and I beleive you will have no problem at all finding places to walk you dog - the problem is more likely to be which one to chose. One good walk in along the River Ouse, which runs throu the middle of York, and provides good dog walking to the northside - out towards the A19. You can literally walk for miles. It is farmland, but there is a common right of way along any river side - you may just have to negotiate a few fishermen !! If you are prepared to drive a little way with your dog before the walk then there are loads of places to go. Also, York is only an hour from the East Coast, where you can take your dog and let him (or her) run free on the beaches. (most are open to dogs between Oct - April) . If you want to email me, I'll have a think about where you could take your dog and give you directions. I have just lost my 15 year old cocker spaniel and one of the thing I miss most is the dog walking - so I do hope you enjoys yours. Good luck with your move to York I am sure you will enjoy it as it is a great place to live (well not so great in the summer when the tourists descend !!)

Hi

You'll find some great walking around York - if you are near the university Walmgate stray is very close - actually walk onto it from the top end of the university near Wentworth college (if it is all the same as when I lived there - I know the Uni has expanded a lot recently!). If you are the other side of the University (Fulford way) there are some lovely walks along the river.

Other good places within the city boundaries are Monk Stray (through Heworth) and the Knavesmire (racecourse).

Have fun - it's a great place to live!
