Hi,
My girl has recently had her third litter of pups. She's always been a very good mother and is a good mother this time, however she is constantly washing her pups. Previously, she washed them a lot (too much!) in the first couple of hours and then settled down to a "sensible" amount of washing.
With this litter she is washing them more than they need to be washed. I have noticed tonight that she has broken the skin on the back of one of the pups. It's like a graze. The fur is still there but looking through the fur you can see a graze and feel a scab.
I have cleaned the area with some diluted peroxide and sprayed some anti-chew liquid on (also for self harming and 100% safe to digest and use on dogs!). The product contains Bitrex, which is supposed to taste so bad that it puts them off. However on introducing the pup back into the nest she immediately licked this off!
Please can anyone tell me what I should do? The puppies are now 6 days old. Should I take the pup away from her and only introduce him under supervision for feeds etc. or should I leave him with her.
Look forward to some advice as I’m quite worried that she will make a hole and then the inevitable will happen.
